Remove the existing Windows Hello fingerprint enrollment and register it again; if Windows only shows Set up yet reports that every finger is already familiar, reinstall the biometric driver to clear the inconsistent enrollment state.
1. Remove and re-register the fingerprint
- Sign in using the newly created PIN or account password.
- Open Start → Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options.
- Select Windows Hello Fingerprint.
- If Remove appears, select it and restart the laptop.
- Return to the same page, select Set up, and enroll one finger.
During enrollment, place different parts and angles of the same finger on the reader. Microsoft recommends removing and re-registering fingerprints when recognition or enrollment fails.^1^
If Remove is unavailable because Windows already displays fingerprint as not configured, continue below.
2. Reinstall the fingerprint-reader driver
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Biometric devices.
- Right-click the fingerprint reader and select Uninstall device.
- Select the option to remove the driver if Windows offers it, then choose Uninstall.
- Restart the laptop. Windows should attempt to reinstall the reader.
- Return to Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options → Windows Hello Fingerprint → Set up and try enrollment again.
Driver reinstallation is Microsoft’s documented next step when removing and re-enrolling the biometric entry does not work.^2^
If the fingerprint reader does not return under Biometric devices, install the Windows 10 biometric driver specifically supplied for the laptop model from its manufacturer. Avoid forcing a driver intended for another model.
3. If the same “fingerprint is familiar” message remains
Reset the Windows Hello PIN relationship and restart the biometric service:
- Make sure the account password is known before removing the PIN.
- Open Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options → Windows Hello PIN.
- Select Remove, restart the computer, and add the PIN again.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
net stop wbiosrvc
net start wbiosrvc
- Restart Windows and try fingerprint setup again.
The PIN is required before fingerprint enrollment, and Microsoft documents removing the PIN and restarting the Windows Biometric Service as a later recovery step.^2^ ^3^
Do not clear the TPM or reset the PC at this stage; those actions can affect credentials or data and are unnecessary until the enrollment and driver repairs have been exhausted.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If the laptop supports Windows 11, plan an upgrade after resolving access to the device.^4^
