I am having endless problems with Microsoft Outlook 365. This has been going on for years. Really getting tired of it. Send receive hangs up close it out and then try to reopen it. And sometimes it won't even reopen. I have to go into safe mode and then play with that for a while and then close that out and then reboot the whole computer and then start all over again. And sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't. I've been playing with it all afternoon. I probably have two or three hours in it and I cannot get anywhere. The most frustrating part of all this is that it just doesn't seem to be anybody at Microsoft that can help me with this. I pay my premium every year, but then I'm on my own. I'm 84 and it's not easy working with this stuff at my age. Please send help. BTW, anyone know of a competitor to Outlook? I'm a new customer if there is one!

Run Microsoft’s Classic Outlook startup and connectivity troubleshooters first; they can automatically diagnose both the failure to reopen and intermittent send/receive hangs without another cycle of Safe Mode and reboots.^1^

    1. Run the automated repair tools

These require Windows 10 or 11 and must be run on the affected computer:

    1. Close Outlook.
    2. Open Start, type Get Help, and open that app.
    3. Search for Classic Outlook startup troubleshooter and follow the prompts.
    4. When finished, return to Get Help and run the Classic Outlook connectivity troubleshooter.
    5. Restart Outlook and test Send/Receive and then closing/reopening it.

Microsoft documents both tools specifically for Classic Outlook startup and intermittent connection problems.^1^

    2. Use the Safe Mode result to isolate add-ins

Since Safe Mode has already been tried, do not keep using it as a temporary ritual. If Outlook stays open and works better in Safe Mode, that indicates an add-in may be responsible:

    1. While Outlook is open in Safe Mode, select File → Options → Add-ins.
    2. At the bottom, select COM Add-ins, then Go.
    3. Take a photo or write down which boxes are selected.
    4. Clear the boxes—do not select Remove—and choose OK.
    5. Close Outlook and open it normally.
    6. If Outlook now works, re-enable one add-in at a time, closing and reopening Outlook after each one. Leave the add-in that brings the problem back disabled.

Microsoft specifically cautions against removing the add-ins during this test.^2^

If Safe Mode also hangs, skip add-in testing and continue below.

    3. Run an Online Repair

This repairs the entire Microsoft 365 installation:

    1. Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
    2. Find Microsoft 365.
    3. Select the three dots → Modify.
    4. Select Online Repair → Repair.
    5. Follow the prompts and restart the computer afterward.

Online Repair is more thorough than Quick Repair and may take some time.^3^

    4. Test with a fresh Outlook profile

A new profile tests Outlook’s account settings without immediately deleting the old profile:

    1. Hold Shift while starting Outlook.
    2. Select Options → New.
    3. Give the profile a name such as Outlook Test.
    4. Add the email account when prompted.
    5. Start Outlook with that profile and test sending, receiving, closing, and reopening.

If the new profile works, continue using it; the old profile is the likely problem. Do not delete the old profile until any locally stored mail is accounted for.^4^

    If Outlook refuses to reopen

    Instead of rebooting:

    1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
    2. Select Microsoft Outlook or OUTLOOK.EXE.
    3. Select End task.
    4. Reopen Outlook.

This is a workaround, not the permanent repair, but it clears an Outlook process that remained running after the window closed.

Contact the support included with the subscription

If the troubleshooters, Online Repair, and a new profile do not resolve it, use Microsoft’s consumer support page:

    1. Open Microsoft Support.
    2. Select the Personal account tab.
    3. Under Microsoft technical support, select Get help.
    4. Sign in with the Microsoft account that pays for Microsoft 365.
    5. Enter: Classic Outlook hangs during Send/Receive and will not reopen.
    6. Continue until Contact Support or a chat option is offered.

Support availability and contact method depend on the product and subscription, but Microsoft’s support page can route a Microsoft 365 home subscriber to technical support.^5^

Until the desktop program is repaired, mail can usually be accessed through the email provider’s webmail in a browser. Other desktop email programs exist, but changing programs will not necessarily fix a damaged Outlook profile or Microsoft 365 installation; first verify that the mailbox itself works through webmail.
