How to update out-of-date copy of OneDrive on new computer

I am currently using a Windows 10 laptop with Microsoft 365 and OneDrive. I purchased a new Windows 11 laptop two months ago and downloaded OneDrive to it, intending to stop using my old laptop. But I didn't do that. Instead I shelved my new laptop and continued using on my old one.

I have now decided to stop using my old laptop for good and use only my new Windows 11 laptop. But the copy of OneDrive on my new laptop is now out of date; it doesn't contain files I have modified or created during the past two months while using my old laptop, and it contains files I deleted from my old laptop during that time.

How do I get the current OneDrive on my new laptop?

It is important to determine if it is because updates on the old laptop haven't synced to the OneDrive cloud yet, or if it is because the new computer hasn't fetched everything from the cloud yet.

To determine the above, please launch the web browser and go to www.onedrive.com, sign into your account, and then go to My Files. Review there and see if all updates from the old laptop are there.

If not, make sure you leave the old laptop connected to the internet and make sure the OneDrive app is running to finish syncing them. Also click on the cloud icon on the taskbar and go to Settings > Sync and backup tab > Manage backup, and turn on all folders and to allow it time to finish syncing.

If yes, on the new laptop, also make sure the new laptop's OneDrive app is running. You can always right-click on the cloud icon, exit out, and restart OneDrive to see if that kicks off the syncing action.

Keep the Windows 11 laptop disconnected until the old laptop’s latest files are confirmed in OneDrive online, then connect the new laptop and let OneDrive synchronize that verified cloud copy.

    1. Make the cloud copy current from the old laptop

    1. On the Windows 10 laptop, connect to the internet and close any open documents.
    2. Select the OneDrive cloud icon near the taskbar clock.
    3. If syncing is paused, resume it. Wait until OneDrive reports Up to date.
    4. Select the cloud icon again and choose View online.
    5. In OneDrive online, check several files changed during the last two months:
      • Confirm their modification dates and contents.
      • Confirm newly created files are present.
      • Confirm files intentionally deleted from OneDrive are absent.

Checking OneDrive online is the recommended way to verify that files were successfully uploaded.^1^

If anything is missing online, locate it on the old laptop and copy or upload it into OneDrive. Do not retire or erase that laptop until everything needed appears online. Microsoft’s migration procedure specifically requires verifying the old PC’s files in OneDrive online before proceeding to the new PC.^2^

Files stored outside the old laptop’s OneDrive folder—and outside any Desktop, Documents, or Pictures folders configured for OneDrive backup—will not transfer automatically.

    2. Synchronize the Windows 11 laptop

After the online copy is correct:

    1. Start the Windows 11 laptop and connect it to the internet.
    2. Do not edit, move, or delete anything in its old OneDrive folder while synchronization is beginning.
    3. Select the OneDrive cloud icon near the clock.
    4. Confirm it is signed in with the same Microsoft account used on the old laptop.
    5. Allow synchronization to finish. Two months of changes can take some time.
    6. Wait until OneDrive reports Up to date, then compare the new laptop with OneDrive online.

Cloud-only files may display a blue cloud icon instead of occupying local disk space. They are still current and download when opened. To retain a file or folder offline, right-click it and select Always keep on this device.^3^

If the new laptop does not update

If OneDrive remains out of date after the online copy has been verified, relink the Windows 11 PC:

    1. Select OneDrive cloud icon → Help & Settings → Settings.
    2. Open Account.
    3. Select Unlink this PC → Unlink account.
    4. Start OneDrive and sign in with the same Microsoft account.
    5. When told that a OneDrive folder already exists, select Use this folder.
    6. Wait for OneDrive to rebuild its synchronization state and report Up to date.

Relinking causes OneDrive to synchronize the cloud files back to the computer; Files On-Demand may initially create placeholders rather than downloading every file.^4^

Only after the Windows 11 copy matches OneDrive online should the old laptop be disconnected, reset, or disposed of.
