I would like to ask for your assistance regarding a Windows 11 issue that is currently affecting approximately workstations in our organization.

Environment

  • HP EliteDesk 705 G5
  • AMD Radeon R7 430 graphics adapter
  • HP P27h G4 monitors
  • Windows 11 Enterprise 24H2
  • Recent Windows updates:
    • KB5127690
      • KB5127648

Driver Information

The affected systems use AMD Radeon R7 430 graphics adapters.

The latest available AMD graphics driver for this platform appears to be from 2022. We have not been able to find any newer driver releases from AMD, HP, or Windows Update, which limits our ability to validate the issue against a newer driver version.

Primary Issue

After upgrading to Windows 11 24H2, audio playback through the following endpoint no longer works correctly:

  • AMD High Definition Audio Device
  • HP P27h G4 audio endpoint

Windows detects the audio device correctly and audio playback indicators show active playback, however no sound is produced through the monitor speakers when using the DisplayPort audio path.

Additional Testing

To isolate the issue, we disabled DisplayPort audio and connected the monitor using a standard 3.5 mm audio cable between the PC and monitor.

With this configuration:

  • Audio playback is restored.
  • Sound is correctly played through the monitor speakers.

However, another issue appears.

After every:

  • Restart
  • Shutdown / Power On
  • Sleep / Resume

the monitor speaker volume becomes muted or automatically resets to zero within the monitor itself.

As a result:

  • Windows continues to show normal audio playback.
  • The analog audio connection remains active.
  • No sound is heard from the monitor speakers.
  • Opening the HP P27h G4 OSD menu reveals that the monitor volume has been muted or reset to zero.
  • Manually increasing the monitor volume immediately restores audio playback.

This behavior is fully reproducible.

Additional Findings

  • The issue affects approximately 200 identical workstations.
  • Multiple DisplayPort cables were tested.
  • AMD audio devices and monitor devices were reinstalled.
  • Audio services were verified and are functioning normally.
  • The latest available AMD drivers were tested.
  • When an alternative graphics adapter is installed, the issue cannot be reproduced.
  • The problem was not observed before the Windows 11 24H2 upgrade.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Kind regards,

Following this as I'm am encountering this issue with our fleet of Dell OptiPlex 7060 with Radeon R5 430 graphics cards.

Noticing a lack of audio with a monitor plugged into the graphics card via DisplayPort which was working last week. I am unsure if it is related to any of these two updates: KB5127648 or KB5127690. Uninstalling the audio driver for the AMD High Definition Audio Device and reinstalling did not help. Changing the driver to use the High Definition Audio Device driver did not help either.

The volume bar stays at 0 and as soon as you try to move it to a higher volume, it reverts back to 0.

    Dear Aurimas,

Thank you for the detailed testing. The alternative graphics adapter working is a useful finding, but it does not yet establish whether the cause is the AMD driver, Windows, or an interaction with the monitor.

One point needs checking first: when DisplayPort audio is silent, is the monitor’s own OSD volume above zero and unmuted? Since raising the OSD volume restores analog audio, we should establish whether the DisplayPort symptom and the monitor-volume reset are separate problems.

On one test workstation, I suggest:

    1. Test DisplayPort with the monitor volume confirmed. Select the HP monitor as the Windows output device, check its OSD volume, and run the Windows sound test. Record whether changing the OSD volume restores DisplayPort audio.
    2. Repeat the graphics-adapter comparison with everything else unchanged: the same monitor, DisplayPort cable, Windows build, and audio settings. Check both sound playback and whether the OSD volume survives restart and sleep/resume.
    3. For the analog test, record the selected Windows endpoint. It should be the PC’s analog audio output. Note whether only the monitor’s OSD volume changes or whether the Windows volume changes too.

As a further controlled test, turn off audio enhancements for the affected output, if available. Microsoft includes this in its audio troubleshooting guidance.

I could not verify a published Microsoft advisory matching this exact Radeon R7 430 / HP P27h G4 DisplayPort and OSD-volume behavior. The listed USB audio issues on the Windows 11 24H2 release-health page should not be assumed to explain it.

Because approximately 200 workstations are affected and the problem is reproducible, I recommend opening a Microsoft support case through your organization’s support agreement and involving HP support. Include:

    • Exact Windows build and update installation dates.
    • AMD graphics and audio driver versions.
    • Results of the controlled adapter comparison.
    • A short recording showing the OSD volume before and after restart.

Please also clarify whether the issue first appeared with the 24H2 upgrade or specifically after KB5127690/KB5127648. That distinction matters before attributing it to either update.

If this helped, I’d appreciate a Like so others can find the answer more easily.

Based on the symptoms and the testing already completed, this is most consistent with a Windows 11 24H2 audio/driver compatibility problem on the DisplayPort audio path, not a general Windows Audio service failure.

The supported actions from the available guidance are:

    1. In Device Manager, verify the DisplayPort audio device is present under Sound, video and game controllers.
      • If it is disabled, enable it.
      • If it is missing, use View > Show hidden devices and then Action > Scan for hardware changes.
    2. Update the audio driver through Windows first.
      • Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update.
      • Select Check for updates.
      • Install all available updates and restart.
      • Windows Update is the recommended method for audio driver updates.
    3. In Device Manager, try a driver refresh for the AMD audio endpoint.
      • Open Device Manager.
      • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      • Right-click the audio device and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
    4. If no newer driver is found, reinstall the audio device.
      • In Device Manager, right-click the audio device.
      • Select Uninstall device.
      • If shown, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
      • Restart the PC so Windows reinstalls the driver.
      • This is low risk, but a restart is required and unsaved work should be saved first.
    5. If the issue started only after Windows Update or the 24H2 upgrade, roll back the audio driver.
      • In Device Manager, open the audio device Properties.
      • On the Driver tab, select Roll Back Driver if available.
      • Follow the prompts.
    6. If rollback is not available or does not help, use System Restore to return the device to a restore point created before the update.
      • Microsoft notes that restore points are created when updates are installed.
    7. For the analog workaround, the repeated mute/reset after restart, shutdown, or sleep points to behavior outside normal Windows playback detection because Windows still shows active playback while the monitor OSD volume is set to zero. The available context does not provide a documented Windows-side fix for monitor OSD volume resetting.
    8. Since the issue does not reproduce with an alternative graphics adapter and the latest available AMD driver is already from 2022, the strongest supported conclusion is a compatibility issue specific to the current AMD DisplayPort audio stack on these systems after 24H2. If Windows Update and Device Manager do not provide a newer compatible driver, the next supported path is to obtain an updated OEM or device-manufacturer driver package. If none exists, escalation to the device manufacturer is required.

For a fleet of ~200 identical systems, the most practical supported sequence is:

    • Check Windows Update for any newer driver payloads.
    • Reinstall the AMD High Definition Audio Device.
    • Roll back the audio driver on a pilot group if the option exists.
    • If unsuccessful, test System Restore on a pilot device.
    • If no newer OEM driver is available, engage the hardware manufacturer because the context does not document a Microsoft fix for this AMD/DisplayPort monitor-audio scenario.
