I am using Acer TravelMate|P with an OS Windows 11 Pro, and the Touchpad is not working. In Device Manager, the I2C HID Device has an exclamation mark.

Install the Windows 11 drivers offered specifically for the Acer TravelMate P216-51—platform/Chipset or Serial IO first, followed by any touchpad driver—and restart after each installation.

Install the Acer drivers in dependency order

Code 10 means that a driver in the device stack failed to start, so the I2C controller/platform driver can be as relevant as the touchpad driver itself.^1^

    1. Connect a USB mouse if available.
    2. Open Acer’s TravelMate P216-51 Drivers and Downloads page.^2^
    3. Select the installed Windows 11 version.
    4. Download and install the applicable packages in this order:
      1. Chipset
      2. Intel Serial IO or another I2C/platform-controller package, if listed
      3. Touchpad, Precision Touchpad, or Mouse and Input, if listed
    5. Restart after each installation, even if the installer does not request it.
    6. Open Device Manager → Human Interface Devices → I2C HID Device → Properties.
    7. Confirm that the yellow exclamation mark and Code 10 are gone, then test the touchpad.

Do not use drivers from third-party driver-download sites. Microsoft recommends obtaining manually installed drivers from the device manufacturer.^3^

If Code 10 remains, reinstall the device

    1. Right-click Start → Device Manager.
    2. Expand Human Interface Devices.
    3. Right-click the problem I2C HID Device → Uninstall device.
    4. Select Uninstall. Do not choose an option to permanently remove a driver package.
    5. Restart Windows using Start → Power → Restart.
    6. Windows should detect the device and reinstall its driver automatically.
    7. Recheck I2C HID Device → Properties → General.

Microsoft documents Device Manager reinstallation as the next step when updating a touchpad driver does not resolve the problem.^4^

Then check Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates and install any Acer, Intel, HID, chipset, or firmware driver offered there. Restart afterward.

    Firmware or hardware fallback

If Acer lists a newer BIOS/firmware version for this exact model, review its release notes for touchpad, I2C, input-device, or stability fixes. Only apply it while connected to AC power, and follow Acer’s instructions exactly; interruption during a BIOS update can make the computer unbootable. The model-specific Acer support page contains the supported downloads and documentation.^5^

If Code 10 persists after the Acer platform drivers, touchpad driver, Device Manager reinstall, and applicable firmware update, contact Acer support. Report:

    • Model: TravelMate P216-51
    • OS: Windows 11 Pro
    • Device: I2C HID Device
    • Status: This device cannot start (Code 10)
    • Whether the problem also occurs in Acer diagnostics or outside Windows, if tested

At that stage, Acer needs to determine whether the remaining failure is firmware-related or a physical touchpad, cable, or system-board issue.

    Hi, let me help you.

Have you tried a hard reset?

Shut down the laptop and unplug the charger, plus any USB devices, SD cards, and dongles. If the battery is removable, take it out. Now press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds, then let go. This drains the leftover charge and clears the glitch.

Wait a minute, then put the battery back in (if you removed it), plug in the charger, and press the power button to turn it on.

If your laptop has a sealed battery, the same steps work. Just skip the battery part.
