I was gifted a used gaming pc from my uncle and I want to factory reset the pc to remove everything to start fresh on it but I am worried that since his was the master account (I don't have access to his Microsoft acct and he can't remember his login since it logs him in automatically) I will be locked out of my pc when I reset it. Or am I worried for nothing?

I have my own Microsoft acct.

If the computer has bitlocker key, or if you don't have admin access, factory reset may not be the answer.

You might want to consider doing a clean install instead, for better outcome.

The following steps should be done on a working Windows computer:

Download the Windows Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's official website. https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11 click on the "download now" button under "Create Windows 11 Installation Media"

Run the tool and select "Create installation media for another PC."

Choose "USB flash drive" as the media to use for the installation and select "Next."

Connect a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of free space to your computer.

Select the USB flash drive you want to use, and then select "Next."

The tool will then download the required files and create the installation media.

    =====================================================

Now these steps will  be done on your problematic computer:

Go to the computer's BIOS boot menu to have it boot from the USB drive.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 11, making sure to choose "Custom install" and select the option to delete all existing partitions.

Once the installation is complete, you'll have a clean installation of Windows 11 on your computer.

A successful Remove everything reset will erase your uncle’s Windows account and let you set up the PC with your own Microsoft account; the main precaution is checking for BitLocker encryption before starting.

    Before resetting

    1. Back up anything your uncle wants to keep.
“Remove everything” deletes personal files, installed applications, accounts, and settings.^1^
    2. Check Windows activation and edition:
      • Open Settings → System → Activation.
      • Note whether Windows is activated.
      • Note whether the edition is Windows 11 Home or Pro.
An activated PC with a digital license can normally reinstall the same edition without entering a product key.^2^
    3. Check for device encryption or BitLocker.
Search Settings for Device encryption, or search Start for Manage BitLocker. If encryption is enabled, make sure the recovery key is available before resetting. Because your uncle configured the PC, that key might be stored in his Microsoft account; Microsoft cannot recreate a lost key.^3^

    Reset the PC

    While signed in:

    1. Open Settings → System → Recovery.
    2. Beside Reset this PC, select Reset PC.
    3. Select Remove everything.
    4. Choose:
      • Cloud download for a fresh Windows download, or
      • Local reinstall to use the existing installation files.
    5. Review the settings and begin the reset.^1^
    6. Do not turn off the PC, even if the screen remains black for an extended period.
    7. When Windows displays its initial setup screens, enter your own Microsoft account. Your uncle’s old Windows sign-in is not required after the account and installation have been removed.

There is generally no need to enable Clean data if you are keeping the computer. That option takes longer and is intended mainly to make deleted data harder to recover before selling or giving away a PC.^1^

    If BitLocker blocks the reset

If Windows asks for a BitLocker recovery key that neither of you can obtain, the normal recovery reset might not proceed. The fallback is a clean installation from Windows 11 USB installation media, deleting the existing partitions during setup. This permanently erases every file and recovery partition on that drive.^4^

    During installation:

    • Select the same Windows edition noted earlier.
    • If prompted for a key, select I don’t have a product key.
    • If the PC has a matching digital license or a key stored in its firmware, Windows can apply it after installation.^5^

If Settings → System → Activation currently says Windows is not activated, resolve the license situation before erasing the installation; possession of your own Microsoft account does not itself provide a Windows license.
