When I try to login to my Microsoft 365 account it defaults to an Outlook email account that I rarely use. It's not easy, but eventually I can login using my gmail address. I'd like to link these addresses to avoid this issue, but it says the .outlook address I am trying to link is already taken... Yes, by me! how do I fix this?\

I understand you’re able to sign in eventually with your Gmail address, but Microsoft sign-in initially brings up the Outlook address, and you’re trying to determine whether the two addresses can be associated with the same account.

Before suggesting the appropriate account steps, could you please confirm:

Is the Microsoft 365 subscription you’re signing into Microsoft 365 Personal/Family, or is it provided by your work, school, or another organization?
When you sign in using the Gmail address, does it take you to the same Microsoft account/subscription that you expect to use?
Is the @outlook.com address currently able to sign in separately at account.microsoft.com?

Hi Emma. I have a Microsoft 365 Personal/Family plan. The account that logs in when I turn on my laptop is the one with the gmail address. All good. The problem is that any way I try to log into Defender, it wants me to log in again (even if I'm launching defender from my 365 account screen) and it does not allow me to change to default .outlook email account for logging in. I can log in to the .outlook account but that one has no subsriptions. I tried removing that account in settings, then rebooting, but even that didn't work.

I have Microsoft 365 Personal/Family plan with my account using my gmail address and that's the one I am logged into when I turn on my laptop. Microsoft Defender sends an email to my ".gmail" address stating that a data breach needs my attention. But when I click to open Defender it tries to do so using a ".outlook" address that I rarely use. If I can login to the Microsoft account under that name, it shows no subscription to 365 and it wants me to buy it (again). This Defender email is useless to me the way it currently works. I can't seem to change the default login it is trying to use to anything other than that .outlook address. I even went to settings and removed the .outlook account and that didn't change anything.

Hello Fred James,

Since you have already tried removing the Outlook account, please try this instead:

Open Microsoft Defender and sign out of the account currently being used.

From Start, find Microsoft Defender, right-select it, and choose Uninstall.

Reinstall Microsoft Defender from the Microsoft Store using Microsoft's Defender installation page: https://aka.ms/WindowsDefender

When Defender asks you to sign in, use the personal Microsoft account associated with your Microsoft 365 Personal/Family subscription, which in your case is the account using your Gmail address.

Hi. I went ahead and deleted the Defender app from my laptop, then reinstalled it.from the Microsoft store. Now the app won’t even open, I just get a brief spinning wheel and nothing else. Unfortunately I will now be away from my laptop for a few weeks and won’t be able to try anything else until then. Thanks for trying.
