Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
This usually means Office on the Mac has fallen out of activation or is using the wrong license state, so Excel drops into reduced functionality and won’t save edits.
Try this in order:
- Check macOS version For recent License Not Found / Unknown Error 0x0 issues, Office on Mac should be on macOS 12 or later.
- Fully quit all Office apps Close Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and OneNote.
- Update Office
If Office was installed from microsoft.com:
- Open Finder > Applications > Microsoft AutoUpdate
- Select Update All
- If Microsoft AutoUpdate is not visible, check:
/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/
- Open App Store
- Select Updates
- Update the Microsoft apps
- Reopen Excel and test saving If the issue was caused by the known licensing/update problem, saving should work again after the updates complete.
- If apps are still in reduced functionality mode after updating
- Quit the app completely with Command + Q
- Reopen it
- Go to the app’s Account settings
- Sign out, then sign in again with the account tied to the renewed Microsoft 365 subscription
- If the Mac previously had a one-time Office license Old license files can block the subscription license from being used correctly. In that case, use the license removal tool to completely remove Office license files, then reactivate with the correct account. Before doing this, make sure the account name and password for the subscription are available, because Office will need to be activated again.
- If Excel still says no license Contact Microsoft support.
Notes:
- When Office is in reduced functionality mode, files can usually be opened, viewed, and printed, but not edited, saved, or created.
- No user data is lost from this state; full functionality returns after the apps are updated and activation is restored.
