Request for Assistance - Unable to Access Account After Authenticator Deletion

Hello Microsoft Support Team,

I am writing to request assistance with my account under the domain .onmicrosoft.com. I accidentally deleted my Microsoft Authenticator registration and now I am unable to sign in or verify my identity, as I do not have any backup verification methods configured.

When I attempt to log in, I am prompted to approve a request in the Authenticator app or enter a code from the app, but since the registration was removed, I cannot complete these steps. I have tried the available recovery options, but none work because there are no alternate methods linked to my account.

As I am the sole user and administrator of this tenant, I need guidance on how to reset my multi-factor authentication (MFA) settings or regain access to my account. Please advise me on the recovery process or the steps I should take to restore access.

Thank you for your support.

Best regards, J

Please note: This is a user-to-user Community forum. No one here can access Microsoft’s backend systems, create a support ticket, or make changes to your account, tenant, or billing information. You must contact Microsoft Support directly, as only an authorized support agent can assist with these requests.

    Hello Jia Jiunn Lim,

Thank you for providing the detailed information.

Based on your description, you appear to be the only user and administrator of this Microsoft 365 business tenant. Since there is no other Global Administrator available to reset your authentication methods, you will need to contact Microsoft Support and request assistance from the Data Protection Team.

This team has the authority and the specific security procedures to verify your identity as the legitimate owner of the account and then reset your MFA settings from their end. Please try to find the related hotline number to call the frontline and let them raise a ticket for you: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support

Here are some tips and an example of a prompt to help you navigate the IVR more effectively:

(When you call the support number, you may hear an introduction of about 30 seconds such as "you can visit the link...". You can ignore this introduction and wait until you are presented with the options. Then press "1" as a business email user, and again "1" for technical help)

In some regions you may initially interact with an automated system, so here is an example of how you can answer the prompts to reach the right team more quickly:

    • What kind of problem are you experiencing?
    • Answer: Authenticator
    • What products do you use?
    • Answer: Office 365 for business
    • Is this for an education or company account?
    • Answer: For companies
    • Are you an administrator?
    • Answer: Yes
    • Are there any other administrators in your organization?
    • Answer: No. I am the only admin in my tenant
    • Do you need a... Service request?
    • Answer: Yes. I need to create a ticket. Please send me direct to the Data Protection Teams.

I also recommend calling during business hours. In my experience, it can be difficult to get through to the correct support queue, and automated systems don't always work as expected. If you can't get through on your first try, I suggest trying again later or at a different time.

If you are unable to reach support via the phone numbers, there is a workaround you might consider: You can register for a new Microsoft 365 tenant by signing up for a trial subscription here: Microsoft 365 Business Plans and Pricing | Microsoft 365

Once the new tenant is created, you can access the admin center and submit a support ticket from there, requesting to speak with the Data Protection Team on behalf of your original tenant.

When opening a support ticket, please make sure the Support Assistant (AI) in the Help panel is turned Off. Several customers have reported that the Contact Support option may not appear while the Support Assistant is enabled. Once the AI assistant is turned off, you should be able to enter a description of the issue and the Contact Support option will appear, allowing you to submit a ticket directly to Microsoft Support.

    Important notes:

    • This new trial tenant will not give you access to any of the data or settings in your original locked tenant. It is solely a temporary means to contact Microsoft support.
    • The resolution time might be longer as you are contacting support from a different tenant.
    • Remember to cancel the trial subscription for the new tenant once your issue with the original account is resolved to avoid any unintended charges: Cancel your Microsoft business subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft Learn

Because you are the sole administrator and cannot access the tenant, call Microsoft 365 business support and request a service request with the Data Protection team to recover the tenant and reset your authentication methods.

    Contact Microsoft support

    1. Open the official country/region support directory and select the business-support number for your location: ^1^
    2. When prompted, identify the issue as:
      • Product: Microsoft 365 or Office 365 for business
      • Issue: Microsoft Authenticator/MFA lockout
      • Role: Sole Global Administrator
      • Other administrators available: No
      • Request: Create a service request and route it to the Data Protection team
    3. State clearly:

I am the sole Global Administrator of a Microsoft 365 tenant. The only registered Microsoft Authenticator method was deleted, there are no alternative verification methods, and I cannot access the admin center. I need tenant ownership verification and recovery of my administrator access so that I can register MFA again.

    4. Have relevant ownership and subscription information available, such as:
      • Administrator sign-in name and tenant domain
      • Subscription and billing details
      • Invoice or order information, if available
      • A reachable telephone number and alternate email address
      • Domain ownership or business documentation if requested

This is the recovery path used for the matching scenario in which the sole administrator has no usable MFA method and cannot open the admin portal.^2^

Microsoft Learn Q&A moderators cannot access or modify the tenant, so posting the tenant name publicly will not trigger an MFA reset. The support case must go through Microsoft’s identity-verification and recovery process.

If telephone support does not create the case

As the documented case-specific fallback, create a temporary Microsoft 365 Business trial tenant under a different account, sign in to that tenant’s admin center, and then:

    1. Select Help & support.
    2. Enter Sole Global Administrator locked out—lost all MFA methods.
    3. If the suggested results do not resolve it, select Contact Support.
    4. Ask for escalation to the Data Protection team for the original locked tenant.

The normal authenticated path is Microsoft 365 admin center → Help & support → Contact Support.^3^ A closely matching accepted answer documents using a temporary trial tenant when telephone escalation cannot be completed.^2^

Cancel the temporary trial after recovery to prevent unintended charges.

If the subscription was purchased entirely through a Microsoft partner, contact that partner instead; Microsoft’s business-support documentation states that customers whose subscriptions were all purchased through a partner should obtain support from the partner.^3^

    After access is restored

    1. Register Microsoft Authenticator again and complete a test sign-in.
    2. Add at least one additional strong authentication method. Microsoft recommends multiple methods so losing one does not cause another lockout.^4^
    3. Create administrative redundancy. Microsoft recommends at least two emergency-access accounts and advises limiting ordinary Global Administrator assignments.^5^
    4. Assign a separate Privileged Authentication Administrator where appropriate; that role can provide a recovery path if a Global Administrator is locked out.^6^
