I currently have a family plan that allows 1TB of storage per person. That equates to 5TB of storage. I see the plan is now changing to 2TB of shared storage instead, and Microsoft is trying to market this as a good thing? Does anyone else have a problem with this?

A Microsoft 365 Pro subscription includes 5 TB of shared OneDrive storage but costs a lot more.

Yes. Under the current older Family plan model, subscriptions started before October 6, 2026 include 1 TB per person for up to 6 people. Under the newer model, Family moves to 2 TB shared storage for up to 6 people.

That means the total available storage for the subscription changes from potentially up to 6 TB across members under the older per-person model to 2 TB total shared across the subscription under the new model.

Microsoft’s stated reason for the change is flexibility:

    • storage automatically goes where it is needed
    • members are less likely to hit individual limits
    • unused storage can benefit the whole family
    • additional storage purchases help everyone on the subscription

Microsoft also states that even though storage is shared, each person’s files remain private by default unless they explicitly share them.

For existing Microsoft 365 Family subscribers, the shared-storage change generally takes effect when the subscription renews on or after the rollout date. One support article says this is after the first renewal on or after May 2, 2027, while the storage quotas article says existing Family renewals start April 1, 2027.
