Issue: Purview PST Import – “New import job” option not showing

Hi there,

We are unable to create a PST Import job in Microsoft Purview. The Import page continues to indicate that the Mailbox Import Export role is required, and the New import job option is not available.

We have already verified through Exchange Online PowerShell that the global account has both required roles effectively assigned through Organization Management:

  • Mailbox Import Export – Enabled: True
  • Mail Recipients – Enabled: True

Get-ManagementRoleAssignment also confirms that the Mailbox Import Export role assignment to Organization Management is enabled and organization-wide.

Could you please check whether there is any backend permission synchronization/authorization issue with the Microsoft Purview Import service and advise why the portal is still not recognizing these effective permissions?

Best regards,

    HI @Abdul Haseeb ,

Thank you for providing the details.

You have already confirmed that the required Mailbox Import Export and Mail Recipients roles are assigned. Microsoft documents these roles as sufficient to create PST import jobs.

    Please try the following once:

    1. Sign out completely from Microsoft Purview.
    2. Close the browser and sign in again with the account that has these permissions.
    3. Go to Data Lifecycle Management > Microsoft 365 > Import.
    4. Check whether New import job is available.

Microsoft's documented process shows that New import job should be available on the Import page when the account has the appropriate permissions.

Regarding your question about a backend permission synchronization/authorization issue, we cannot confirm that from the information available. If the required roles are still shown as enabled but New import job remains unavailable after signing in again, further tenant-specific investigation would be required. In that case, please open a Microsoft Support request so the authorization issue can be investigated.
