I am locked out of my purchased Microsoft office until I "activate" office 365

I am locked out of my purchased Microsoft Office suite until/unless I activate office 365. I do not want office 365. I do not work with my system connected to the internet.

Do I have to purchase the whole MS Office suite again?

It is office 2021 for mac.

To be fair, it has been warning me that the purchased version I have is no longer supported. But I disabled all the autoupdates and hoped that would get me through the end of the year.

You do not need to buy Office again if you own a valid one-time-purchase (perpetual) license; reactivate that license instead of accepting the Microsoft 365 offer.

    Restore the purchased Office license

    1. Temporarily use an internet-connected device and sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the original purchase: https://account.microsoft.com/services
    2. Check whether Office Home & Student, Home & Business, Professional, 2024, 2021, 2019, or 2016 appears under Services & subscriptions.
      • For Office 2019 and later, that associated Microsoft account normally replaces the product key for installation and activation.^1^
      • If it is listed, do not purchase or activate Microsoft 365.
    3. On the affected computer, open Word and select File > Account.
      • Note the product displayed under Product Information.
      • If Switch License is available, select it and sign in with the account that owns the perpetual Office license.
      • For Office 2016 with a product key, choose Use a different account > Enter product key instead, enter the key, and select Install this product instead.^2^
    4. If the installed product still identifies itself as Microsoft 365, uninstall only that unwanted Microsoft 365 or trial installation, then reinstall Office from the Install option beside your purchased product in Services & subscriptions. A one-time-purchase license can be reinstalled using the Microsoft account originally associated with it.^3^

Microsoft may use similar app names or installation components for Microsoft 365 and perpetual Office; the license recognized under File > Account determines whether editing is enabled. If Office remains unlicensed, it eventually permits opening and printing documents but disables creating and editing them.[^4^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "A subscription notice appears when I open a Microsoft 365 application | Microsoft Support")

If this computer cannot connect to the internet

Microsoft still supports offline activation of perpetual products through the Product Activation Portal, including activation for non-connected computers. Since December 3, 2025, this portal has replaced the automated telephone activation process.^5^

    From another internet-connected device:

    1. Open https://visualsupport.microsoft.com.
    2. Complete the CAPTCHA and sign in with a personal Microsoft account or supported work/school account. This sign-in controls portal access and does not associate that account with the product license.
    3. Select Activate a Microsoft Product.
    4. Choose the option applicable to the perpetual Retail, OEM, or volume-licensed product and complete the displayed activation workflow.
    5. If the product is not accepted, use the portal’s Contact Support option.

Be aware that perpetual does not necessarily mean activation never needs to be checked again. Office 2021 may require periodic internet access to confirm its license, while Office 2024 requires periodic reactivation and can enter reduced-functionality mode if reactivation is not completed.^6^^7^

    If this is a Mac

If Office was installed from the Mac App Store, remove those apps and reinstall the appropriate perpetual edition directly from Microsoft. Microsoft documents direct installers for Office 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024 for Mac.^8^

If the correct edition is already installed but the wrong license remains selected:

    1. Confirm that the purchased license is visible in the owning Microsoft account.
    2. Download and run Microsoft’s License Removal Tool.
    3. Restart the Mac.
    4. Open an Office application and activate using the account associated with the one-time purchase.

The tool removes locally stored licensing data; it does not delete the purchase.^9^

If the perpetual product is absent from the account, gather the purchase receipt, original product key or card, and exact Office edition, then use the Product Activation Portal’s support option. Do not buy another copy until Microsoft has checked the existing license.

    Hello Lane,

You do not need to buy it all over again. I just need a little more info so we can get your actual purchased version back as the default.

    • Do you remember exactly which version of Office you bought, like Office 2019 or Office 2021?
    • Also, is this happening on a brand new computer or did it just start randomly on your regular PC?

Check Start > Settings > Apps > Installed Apps and let me know if you see Microsoft 365 sitting there right alongside your regular Office installation. Once I know what we are dealing with we can easily kick the 365 version out and get your offline setup working again.
