OneDrive does not need a direct iCloud connection: upload the iPhone photos to OneDrive, verify they arrived, and then sign in to the same OneDrive account on the laptop.
1. Check the iPhone upload
If you want the entire camera roll copied automatically:
- Open OneDrive on the iPhone.
- Tap your account image → Settings → Camera Upload.
- Confirm that the displayed Microsoft account is the one you will use on the laptop. An iPhone camera roll can upload to only one OneDrive account at a time.
- Turn on Camera Upload and, if required, Include Videos. Camera Upload is a one-way backup: deleting an uploaded photo from the iPhone does not delete its OneDrive copy.^1^
If you only need selected photos:
- In OneDrive, tap Add (+) → Upload.
- Choose the existing photos, select them, and tap Done.^2^
2. Check iCloud photo storage
If Optimize iPhone Storage is enabled, some full-size originals may exist only in iCloud. OneDrive cannot upload photos that are optimized in this way.
On the iPhone, open Settings → iCloud → Photos, turn off Optimize Storage, and allow the originals to download before trying the OneDrive upload again.^3^
This requires enough free iPhone storage for the originals. If that is not practical, download the photos from iCloud directly to the laptop instead, then copy them into the laptop’s OneDrive folder.
For a large upload:
- Connect the iPhone to power; OneDrive will not back up photos below 20% battery.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and turn off Low Power Mode.
- In iPhone Settings, find OneDrive and enable Background App Refresh.
- Do not force-close OneDrive.
- In OneDrive, select Remaining → Get Started → Turn on Bedtime Backup if that option appears.^1^
Also check that your Microsoft storage is not full, because new files cannot upload or synchronize after the storage quota is exceeded.^3^
3. Verify the upload before changing or deleting anything
Open OneDrive and check Photos or Files → Pictures → Camera Roll. Open several recent and older photos to confirm that the full images—not merely iPhone thumbnails—are present.
Do not remove photos from iCloud or the iPhone until this check is complete.
4. Save OneDrive to the laptop
Windows 10 or 11
- Open Start, search for OneDrive, and launch it.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account selected on the iPhone.
- Open File Explorer → OneDrive – Personal → Pictures → Camera Roll.
- To keep a physical offline copy, right-click the required folder and select Always keep on this device. Alternatively, select the OneDrive cloud icon → Settings → Sync and backup → Advanced settings → Download all files.^4^
A solid green circle indicates that the item is stored locally; a blue cloud means it remains online-only.
Mac
- Open OneDrive using Command+Space, search for OneDrive, and sign in with the same Microsoft account.
- Choose the folders to synchronize during setup.
- Open Finder → OneDrive → Pictures → Camera Roll.
- If you require a physical offline copy, right-click the photos or folder and select Always Keep on This Device.^5^
If Camera Upload still does not work
Reset OneDrive without deleting the cloud files:
- On the iPhone, open OneDrive → Profile → Settings → Account.
- Select the affected account, then Reset.
- Reopen OneDrive and check Camera Upload again.^6^
If “OneDrive” means documents or other files rather than photos, Camera Upload does not apply. Sign in to the same OneDrive account on the laptop and synchronize or download the required folders directly.
