From the available information, Microsoft offers free learning content, but free certification is generally limited to specific promotional offers rather than being permanently available for all levels.

    Supported details:

    • Free courses and training
      • Microsoft provides free training resources, including:
        • free hands-on, self-paced labs
        • free walkthroughs, how-to guides, sample code, test drives, and documentation
        • some Microsoft Learn course content is free to access
      • There are also free educator-focused AI courses such as:
        • Embark on your AI journey with free AI tools from Microsoft (1-hour)
        • Embark on your AI journey with free AI tools from Microsoft (3-hour)
      • These educator courses are marked Beginner level.
    • Certification exams are usually paid
      • Context states that courseware can be free, but the certification exam must be paid.
      • Another supported answer states Microsoft does not generally offer free certifications for advanced Azure courses, and certification exams usually require payment.
    • When free certification exams are available
      • Free certification exams are offered through time-limited promotional events.
      • Examples in the available information include:
        • Microsoft Build Cloud Skills Challenge 2020: Free Certification Exam
        • Microsoft Ignite Cloud Skills Challenge 2020: Free Certification Exam
        • Microsoft Ignite and Microsoft Ignite The Tour: Free Certification Exam Offer
      • These offers included one free eligible certification exam.
      • Eligible exams included Microsoft fundamentals, role-based, and specialty certification exams.
    • Conditions for those free exam offers
      • For the Build Cloud Skills Challenge 2020 offer:
        • attendance at Microsoft Build was required
        • completion of one Cloud Skills Challenge collection was required
        • one free eligible exam could be claimed
        • the exam had to be taken on or before January 31, 2021
      • For the Ignite free exam offers:
        • attendance at Microsoft Ignite 2019 or Microsoft Ignite The Tour 2019-2020 in person was required for that specific offer
        • one free eligible exam could be claimed
        • the offer was valid until January 31, 2021
    • What “free certification” usually means
      • A free promotional offer typically gives access to a free certification exam, not an automatic certificate.
      • A certificate is issued only after successfully passing the exam and claiming the badge.
    • How to find free or discounted certification opportunities
      • Available guidance says vouchers are usually offered through:
        • Microsoft Learn challenges
        • special events such as Ignite or AI Skills Fest
        • occasional Virtual Training Days
      • These offers are event-based and time-limited, not permanent.
    • Level coverage
      • The available information confirms free courses at least at the Beginner level for the educator AI courses.
      • For certifications, the free promotional exam offers covered fundamentals, role-based, and specialty exams, but the available information does not provide a complete permanent catalog organized as beginner, intermediate, or master level.
