Try these steps in order:
- On the Windows sign-in screen, select Sign-in options and choose the password option if it appears. For Windows Safe Mode, only the password option works; PIN and biometric options are unavailable.
- Make sure the PC is connected to the internet from the lock screen:
- Select the Network icon on the sign-in screen.
- Connect to Wi-Fi, or use Ethernet if available.
- Then try signing in again with the Microsoft account password.
- If the account shows "You tried to sign in too many times with an incorrect account or password", stop repeated attempts. This error can happen after too many incorrect sign-ins, if someone else is trying the wrong account details, or if there is an app, browser, device, or network issue.
- If the password is correct but sign-in still fails, recover the Microsoft account password:
- Use Recover your account.
- Enter the email address, phone number, or Skype name used to sign in.
- Choose where to receive the security code.
- Enter the code, then set a new password.
- When entering the account name, verify the correct email domain such as .com vs .co.uk, and check for spelling differences.
- If passkey is unavailable, that can happen on devices that do not have screen lock enabled, on older operating systems or browsers that do not fully support passkeys, or during device/connectivity issues. If using a new device, passkeys may need to be set up again.
- If normal sign-in still does not work, start Windows in Safe Mode with Networking:
- On the sign-in screen, select Power > Restart.
- When the sign-in screen appears, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
- Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After restart, select 5 or press F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
- Try signing in with the Microsoft account password.
- If Windows signs in with a temporary profile or shows "We can't sign in to your account", save any new files created in that session to external storage first, because changes made in a temporary profile are lost when signing out. Then:
- Restart in Safe Mode and sign in with the original profile.
- Restart normally and try again.
- More than one restart may be needed.
- If the issue continues, try signing in with a different account on the device, if one exists. After signing in, check for Windows updates and review the existing accounts.
- If the Microsoft account still cannot be found or still cannot sign in after recovery, contact support.
