- The file path or name is invalid
- Excel can fail to access files if the file or folder name contains these characters:
< > ? [ ] : | *. - Rename the file in File Explorer to remove any of those characters.
- Also make sure the full file path is not more than 218 characters.
- Excel can fail to access files if the file or folder name contains these characters:
- Permissions are insufficient
- If Windows is denying access, the file or folder permissions may not allow access.
- Try moving the file to a simple local location such as Desktop and open it from there.
- Excel is being affected by add-ins or startup items
- Start Excel in Safe Mode: hold Ctrl while opening Excel, then confirm Safe Mode.
- Open the file from inside Excel.
- If it works, go to File > Options > Add-ins > Manage COM Add-ins > Go, then clear enabled add-ins.
- The workbook may need repair
- In Excel, go to File > Open.
- Select the workbook.
- Select the arrow next to Open > Open and Repair.
If the message is specifically about access denied, the supported cause is insufficient security permissions on the file, device, or disk.
