A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
This behavior is commonly tied to macOS window tiling or Word reusing the last view state.
Try these steps in order:
- In macOS, open System Settings > Desktop & Dock.
- Turn off Tile by dragging windows to screen edges.
- This addresses the case where a Word window expands when it touches a screen edge.
- If Word is currently full screen, exit it with Control + Command + F.
- Then resize the Word window to the preferred size.
- Close all documents while leaving Word open, then quit Word and reopen it.
- This can help Word remember the preferred window state instead of reopening full screen.
- If the problem continues, reset Word preferences.
- Warning: this removes custom preferences such as keyboard shortcuts and toolbar or dictionary changes.
- Quit all programs.
- In Finder, open Go > Home > Library. On newer macOS versions, use Go, hold Option, then choose Library.
- Open Preferences and move
com.microsoft.Word.plistto the desktop. - Open the Microsoft folder in Preferences and move
com.microsoft.Word.prefs.plistto the desktop. - Start Word and test.
- If the issue is gone, quit Word and return one file at a time to identify the corrupt preference file. Move the corrupt one to Trash.
- If resetting preferences does not help, test the Word template.
- Quit all programs.
- Open Library > Application Support > Microsoft > Office > User Templates.
- Move Normal.dotm to the desktop.
- Start Word and test again.
- If the issue stops, quit Word and delete the old Normal.dotm.
- If the window is not actually resizing but the document view is changing to show multiple pages, check the zoom behavior.
- Word is reported to reuse the last zoom setting used.
- Save and close a document at the preferred zoom, then test whether new documents open the same way.
If the issue started after a macOS change and specifically happens when windows approach screen edges, step 1 is the most directly relevant fix.
