I put all my files on the cloud and am using Onedrive so I can autosave my docs. Problem is I cannot save

Onedrive files to my desktop. How can I do this?

Here is the problem. If you save it to desktop and open it - auto save is not on. Then you have to select autosave which saves it in Onedrive and turns autosave on. But you have to do this each time you open it from your desktop. Bottom line is Onedrive does not communicated directly to your desktop. You have to do steps to use Onedrive with your desktop. It is very inconvenient.

    Hello,

I understand that you are having trouble using the "AutoSave" feature on Office applications.

    1. May I please know if you get any error message when enabling 'AutoSave' function on the Office apps? Could you please check the OneDrive cloud icon in the system tray and let me know if you see any warning, error, or sync symbols on it?

AutoSave works only for files that are stored on OneDrive or in Sharepoint and requires an active Microsoft Office 365 Subscription.

That is, When you edit a document in word, click File > Save As > Select OneDrive - Personal > Select the 'Documents' folder that syncs with OneDrive. This enables the 'AutoSave' feature for the particular Word file. So,

First, please decide where you want to save the files on your device.

You can save them to OneDrive, your desktop (Local), or both.

If you want to keep the files in both locations, follow these steps:

    • Right-click the OneDrive icon on the taskbar.
    • Select Settings > Sync and Backup > Advanced Settings > Files On-Demand > Download all files.
    • This will download all your OneDrive files to your PC, where they will use space on your hard drive.

    ANOTHER OPTION:

Alternatively, you can keep a separate local copy that does not sync with OneDrive:

    • Create a new folder on your local C: or D: drive.
    • Go to https://onedrive.live.com/ and open the My files section.
    • Download the Documents folder, and then extract it to the new local folder you created.
    • OneDrive will not sync this local folder.
    • You can access these documents locally at any time, but AutoSave will not work for files stored in this folder.

Use Save As or Save a Copy and choose Desktop instead of OneDrive.

Steps in an Office app such as Word:

    1. Open the file.
    2. Go to File > Save As or Save a Copy.
    3. Select This PC or Browse.
    4. Choose Desktop as the location.
    5. Enter the file name if needed, then select Save.

If the file is currently stored in OneDrive, Office may show Save a Copy instead of Save As. The function is the same.

If the goal is to make Desktop the default place Windows saves important folders, OneDrive can also back up or stop backing up folders like Desktop, Documents, and Pictures through OneDrive settings. In OneDrive, select the cloud icon in the notification area, then Help and Settings > Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup.

Also, even when OneDrive is enabled for AutoSave, files can still be saved locally each time by choosing This PC and then the Desktop folder.
