A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
Try these fixes in order:
- Close the file and the app using it. If the file is open in Word, another Office app, or another program, OneDrive cannot sync it while it is in use. After saving and closing the app, OneDrive should sync again.
- Check file permissions on the Documents file or folder.
In File Explorer:
- Right-click the file or folder with the issue
- Select Properties
- Open the Security tab
- Select the Windows account from Groups or user names
- Make sure Read and Write are allowed
- If not, select Edit and add Read and Write permission
- Restart sync for the affected file.
- Right-click the OneDrive cloud icon on the taskbar
- Select Close OneDrive
- In File Explorer, move the file out of the OneDrive Documents folder to a location outside OneDrive, such as *C:* under This PC
- Start OneDrive again from Start by typing OneDrive and opening it
- Wait until OneDrive shows Up to date
- Copy the file back into the Documents folder
- Check for OneDrive folder backup limits.
OneDrive folder backup can fail if:
- the full file path is longer than 260 characters
- the file is larger than 250 GB
- the file name starts with a space or contains invalid characters like
\ : / * ? < > " |
- Check whether OneDrive storage is full. If OneDrive is full, files stored there cannot be saved until storage usage is reduced.
- If Documents is being redirected to OneDrive and that is not wanted, change the default save behavior. In Office, go to File > Options > Save and enable Save to Computer by default. Also set Default local file location to a folder outside the local OneDrive folder.
If the problem is only with the Documents folder and Desktop works, the most likely causes are missing Read/Write permission on Documents, a stuck OneDrive sync state, or a file/path restriction in that folder.
