I am 73. I do not need the 365 family. Looking for a cheaper option for very light use.

    Hi, @Wayne Nemecek

If you are the only person using Microsoft 365, you may not need the Family plan.

If you still want the Office apps installed on your computer, Microsoft 365 Personal would be the lower-cost subscription for one person.

If you prefer a one-time purchase instead of a subscription:

    • Office Home 2024 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, but not Outlook.
    • Office Home & Business 2024 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook.

Microsoft explains the difference between Microsoft 365 and Office 2024 here:

You can also use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for free online through Microsoft 365 for the web https://m365.cloud.microsoft although some features are limited compared with the desktop apps.

For very light use, the lower-cost options are:

    1. Use the free web apps
      • Includes free web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
      • Files are automatically saved to OneDrive.
      • Free accounts include 5 GB of cloud storage.
      • This is the lowest-cost option if desktop apps are not needed.
    2. Microsoft 365 Basic
      • For one person.
      • Includes 100 GB of cloud storage across Outlook and OneDrive.
      • Includes ad-free Outlook email.
      • Does not provide the full desktop Office apps.
      • Good fit if extra storage and email benefits are needed, but full desktop apps are not.
    3. Microsoft 365 Personal
      • For one individual.
      • Cheaper than Family if sharing is not needed.
      • Best option if the desktop Office apps are still needed for light use.
    4. One-time purchase of Office
      • If a yearly subscription is not wanted, one-time purchase options such as Office Home 2024 or Office Home & Business 2024 are available.
      • This can make sense for occasional use on one computer.

If the current need is only occasional document editing, the free web apps are the cheapest option. If more storage is needed but not the desktop apps, Microsoft 365 Basic is the next lower-cost choice. If the desktop apps are still important, Microsoft 365 Personal is the simpler cheaper alternative to Family.
