A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
A common cause is that Word cannot access a valid printer driver. Layout-related commands such as Margins, Size, Orientation, and other Page Setup dialogs can freeze or crash when no default printer is set or when the printer driver is not available to Word.
Try this:
- In Windows, set a default printer.
- If no physical printer is available, set Microsoft Print to PDF as the default printer.
- Close Word completely.
- Reopen the document and test Layout > Margins again.
If the issue happens specifically when changing orientation or paper size in a document that uses columns, Word can also show layout errors if Equal column width is not enabled. In that case:
- Close the error message.
- Cancel Page Setup.
- Go to Format > Columns.
- Select Equal column width.
- Try the layout change again.
