Why does my microsoft word keep freezing up when I try to adjust the Layout for margins

Which printer is set as the Windows default? If you do not have a physical printer, set the Microsoft Print to PDF virtual driver as the default in Windows (see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/printer/set-a-default-printer-in-windows). Does that stop the error message?

It can be software bug. Exit all Office apps and Run a online repair. Check this below page by Microsoft for instructions:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/lifecycle/repair-an-office-application

First note that it include reinstallation so also verify that your Office license is associated with your account at https://account.microsoft.com/services because it likely include reinstallation.

A common cause is that Word cannot access a valid printer driver. Layout-related commands such as Margins, Size, Orientation, and other Page Setup dialogs can freeze or crash when no default printer is set or when the printer driver is not available to Word.

    Try this:

    1. In Windows, set a default printer.
    2. If no physical printer is available, set Microsoft Print to PDF as the default printer.
    3. Close Word completely.
    4. Reopen the document and test Layout > Margins again.

If the issue happens specifically when changing orientation or paper size in a document that uses columns, Word can also show layout errors if Equal column width is not enabled. In that case:

    1. Close the error message.
    2. Cancel Page Setup.
    3. Go to Format > Columns.
    4. Select Equal column width.
    5. Try the layout change again.
