Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Try these checks in order:
- Open the file from inside Word or Excel instead of double-clicking it.
- Open Word or Excel.
- Go to File > Open > Browse.
- Select the file.
- Click the arrow next to Open and choose Open and Repair.
- This can recover files affected by corruption.
- Check whether the file name or folder path contains unsupported characters.
- Excel may fail to open files from outside Excel if the file name or path contains any of these characters: < > ? [ ] : | *.
- Rename the file in File Explorer to remove those characters.
- Also make sure the full path is not longer than 218 characters.
- Repair the Office app if files do not open in the correct app or show file-association errors.
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the Office product.
- Choose Change.
- Select Quick Repair and then Repair.
- If Office apps are unstable when opening files, update Office first.
- Open any Office app.
- Go to File > Account.
- Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
- If the file may be damaged, try opening it from its actual folder, not from Recent.
- In Word, Excel, or PowerPoint: File > Open > Browse.
- Select the file and use Open and Repair.
- If the file is stored in OneDrive, check whether it has been archived or storage is full.
- A file archived by IT policy must be reactivated before it can be opened.
- If OneDrive storage is full, files may not save correctly until space is freed.
- If the problem started when opening files from Outlook on Windows 8, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012, make sure the Windows Firewall service is running.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type services.msc and select OK.
- In Services, right-click Windows Firewall and select Start.
