    Hi!

What exactly is the error message? Did you recently install Office 365, or are you using the web version?

Where are your Word and Excel files saved? Are they on OneDrive or an external hard drive?

Please send me all the details. These investigative questions are important.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Repair Office first.
      • Select Start and open Control Panel.
      • Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
      • Select Microsoft 365/Office and choose Change.
      • Select Quick Repair and then Repair.
    2. If files still do not open in the correct app, manually set the file association.
      • Open Start > type Control Panel.
      • Select Programs > Default Programs.
      • Under Set a default for a file type or link type, search for the file type such as .docx or .xlsx and assign it to the correct Office app.
      • Repeat for other Office file types if needed.
    3. If multiple Office versions are installed, uninstall the ones not needed.
      • In Control Panel > Uninstall a program, remove older or extra Office versions.
      • Restart the PC afterward.
      • Having multiple Office versions can cause files to open in the wrong version or fail to open correctly.
    4. As a workaround, open the app first, then open the file from inside it.
      • Start Word or Excel.
      • Select File > Open and browse to the saved file.
    5. If desktop apps still do not open the files, the documents stored in Microsoft 365 libraries or OneDrive can be opened in a browser through Office for the web by signing in to Microsoft 365 and selecting the file.

If the issue started after updating Office and Word, Excel, or PowerPoint close unexpectedly when working with cloud files, update Office manually:

    • Open an Office app.
    • Select File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
