Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
If Office 2016 for Mac was previously removed, the supported path is to reinstall the correct Microsoft-downloaded Office 2016 build and then activate it from within an Office app.
- Install the correct Office 2016 for Mac package:
- Home & Business or Volume License: Office 2016 for Mac - Home & Business OR Volume License
- Home & Student: Office 2016 for Mac - Home & Student
- If Office apps were installed from the Mac App Store, remove them first because one-time Office licenses are not compatible with Mac App Store Office apps. App Store versions require a Microsoft 365 subscription for editing, and a perpetual Office 2016 license will leave the apps in reduced functionality mode. To remove App Store apps:
- Close Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Open Finder > Applications.
- Control-click each Office app and choose Move to Trash.
- Install Office from the Microsoft installer package.
- Open Finder > Downloads and double-click the installer package.
- Select Continue through the installer.
- Select Agree to the license terms.
- Choose install options, then select Install.
- Enter the Mac login password if prompted.
- When installation finishes, select Close.
- Activate Office:
- Open an Office app such as Word.
- On the Sign in to activate Office screen, sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the Office 2016 purchase.
- In Word > About Word, confirm the version starts with 16.16 for Office 2016.
- If a newer Office license was previously installed on the Mac and activation does not complete, remove old license files first. Microsoft states that on Mac, older Office licenses may need to be removed after installing another version. The Office 2016 end-of-support guidance also points to the License Removal Tool: Download and run the License Removal Tool.
- If installation or activation still fails, use the Mac activation troubleshooting article for common install and activation issues.
Note: Office 2016 for Mac is out of support, so it can still be used, but it no longer receives security updates or bug fixes.
