I have been charged an annual subscription fee for a computer used in an office that I am no longer associated with. the fee is charged to my personal credit card. How do I stop this recurring charge?

Hello, good day and thanks for your question. I understand that you are looking into cancelling a subscription that is not under your name but was paid using your credit card.

For this, if you have access to the account or if you have means of communication with the owner of the Microsoft account then you can follow the below support links from Microsoft including the removal of your card on the account.

As there is an existing subscription, you will need to cancel it first and then you can go to https://account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365/billing and try it from there or try to turn off the recurring billing at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2277073.

In the event that you are unable to follow the cancellation process, you can reach out to the bank and block specific related charges or have them replace your card to avoid any unwanted charge/s in the future.

If the subscription is not owned by the cardholder and there is no access to the Microsoft account that purchased it, the practical ways to stop the charge are:

    1. Check whether the charge can be identified from Microsoft first.
      • Go to the Manage your payments page and use Investigate to review the charge details.
      • This helps confirm whether the charge is tied to a Microsoft subscription, recurring billing, a family member purchase, a previously declined charge being retried, or another Microsoft purchase.
    2. If the subscription was bought through a third party, contact that seller directly.
      • If it was purchased through a retailer such as Amazon or another reseller, that seller manages the subscription and billing.
      • If it was purchased through Google Play or the Apple App Store, cancellation or refund must be handled through their support.
    3. If access to the Microsoft account is not available, stop the recurring charge through the card issuer or bank.
      • In cases where the subscription belongs to someone else or the account credentials are unavailable, blocking future recurring charges with the credit card issuer or bank is the direct path.
    4. If the charge is recognized and the correct Microsoft account can be recovered, cancel it from the subscription page.
      • Sign in at Services & subscriptions with the same Microsoft account used to purchase the subscription.
      • Select Manage or Cancel subscription.
      • If the page shows Turn on recurring billing, the subscription is already set to expire and no further charge should occur after the shown date.
    5. If a refund is needed, cancel first and then check refund eligibility.
      • Not all cancellations result in a refund.
      • If the charge is unrecognized, use Investigate on the Manage your payments page.
    6. If more help is needed, use Microsoft Support.
      • Go to Contact Microsoft Support, enter the problem, select Get Help, and then Contact Support if needed.
