Issue with my Microsoft 365 Student Subscription

2026-09-25T08:02:43.67+00:00

Hello,

I have a Microsoft 365 Student subscription, but it appears that it is no longer working correctly.

Previously, my Microsoft Office applications were fully activated. However, the desktop version of Office is now running in read-only mode. I can open documents, but I cannot edit existing files or create new ones.

Could you please check the status of my account and clarify:

  • Why my Microsoft 365 Student subscription is no longer functioning properly;
  • Whether my license is still active;
  • If the license has been deactivated, what is the reason;
  • What steps I should take to restore full access to Office applications.

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards, [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed]

    Hi @Роман Володимирович Дюг,

    Just to gently clarify before going any further, this is a community user-to-user support forum. We are fellow users and do not have access to your Microsoft 365 account, subscription details, or licensing information, so we cannot directly check the status of your license. Only your school's IT administrator (or the Microsoft 365 administrators for your educational institution) can view and manage your Education license assignment.

    To better understand the situation, could you please provide the following information?

    • In a desktop Office application, go to File > Account. Do you see any message such as "Unlicensed Product", "Product Deactivated", or any other activation-related warning?
    • Can you sign in to Office for the web (Word Online, Excel Online, etc.) using your school account? If so, are you able to create and edit documents there normally?

    If Office for the web works correctly but the desktop applications remain in read-only mode, it may indicate that the license currently assigned to your account no longer includes the desktop Office applications, or that the desktop activation has failed and needs to be refreshed.

    As a troubleshooting step, please sign out of all desktop Office applications, close them completely, and then reopen an Office application and sign in again using the correct school account associated with your Microsoft 365 Education subscription. After signing back in, check whether Office returns to an activated state and whether you can create and edit documents normally.

    If the issue continues, I recommend contacting your school's IT administrator. Only they can verify whether your Education license has been removed, expired, or changed, and reassign it if you are still eligible. When an Education license that includes desktop Office apps is no longer assigned to an account, the Office desktop applications typically enter reduced functionality mode, where documents can be viewed but not edited.

    I hope this information helps clarify the situation and provides some useful next steps. Thank you for taking the time to provide these details.
