Office 2019, purchased at that time and fully activated and successfully in use has begun threatening to discontinue operation after 29th September and demanding I purchase Office 365. The Office 2019 license was a perpetual one.

Problem began since yesterday's Microsoft update. Please explain steps to resolve this flaw.

User reports here in Q&A indicate that you should be able to reinstall (if necessary) and, more importantly, reactivate your installation of Office, using your associated account.

Microsoft has stated that a Windows update may be part of the problem. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/servicing/os/microsoft-365/kb5002907-optional-update-for-out-of-date-microsoft-365-apps-installations and especially the Important notice in the article (included in the screen shot below).

Hello Mel Plumley,

This might be an activation warning rather than the expiry of your perpetual Office 2019 licence. Since it appeared after an update, please first check what Office is actually showing as installed and activated.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

Open Word and select File > Account. Under Product Information, check whether it says Office 2019, Microsoft 365, or Unlicensed Product. If Office asks you to sign in, use the Microsoft account you originally used to activate Office 2019. You can also check whether Office 2019 appears under Services & subscriptions on that account.

If Office 2019 is listed there, open Word, go to File > Account, sign out, close all Office apps, then reopen Word and sign in with that same account.

Next, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and search for “Office.” If there’s a separate Microsoft 365 trial or another Office installation you don’t use, it may be conflicting with Office 2019. Remove only the unwanted copy, then restart your PC.

If the warning remains, try Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Office > Modify > Online Repair.

If the issue continues, contact Microsoft Support so they can check the license and activation status. This is a user-to-user forum, so we’re unable to check those account details here. Our role is limited to providing technical guidance on reported issues, requests, or ideas.

Here's how to reach out to the Microsoft Support Team (live chat):

  1.  Go to: https://support.microsoft.com/home/contact
  2. In the search box, enter a short description of your issue, then choose "Get Help"
  3. Scroll down and select Sign in to contact support (please sign in using a personal Microsoft account). Then follow the on-screen prompts to reach Support Team.

Tips:

  • Support chat availability may vary by country/region, product, and support hours. If you can't get in touch with a chat agent right away, trying again later or at a different time may help.
  • If the support page directs you to the automated assistant, type “I need a live agent” in the chat.

Thank you so much for your patience!

This is a bug related to the recent KB5002907 update.

I’m already seeing multiple users reporting the same problem here on Microsoft Q&A and on Reddit.

At this time, Microsoft has not officially acknowledged the issue or published a workaround or mitigation. If that changes, I can update the information here.

For now, reinstalling or reactivating with the original key could work.

Here is one example of the same issue being reported:
