Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Try removing the old work account from Windows first, because reinstalling Microsoft 365 usually does not remove the device’s stored work or school account connection.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
- If the former employer account is listed, select it and choose Disconnect.
- Restart the PC.
If the old account still appears in Office apps after that:
- Open Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential Manager.
- Check Windows Credentials and remove entries related to the former employer account.
- Restart the PC again, then open an Office app and sign in only with the current account.
If the old account is still tied to the device or tenant and cannot be removed locally, the former organization may still have the account associated in their tenant. In that case, the former organization’s administrator needs to remove that association.
If the issue is specifically that Windows keeps preferring the old organization identity, the Access work or school disconnect step is the primary fix.
