I am using Windows-11 Home. In the event Windows should crash (I.e., BSOD) or otherwise not boot, what USB should I create to begin the recovery process?

My system came with the O/S preinstalled, but I am not finding it; 'Show Hidden Items' is enabled. In Disk Management the EFI System Partition is there but I do not believe that contains the O/S. $Windows.~BT was deleted to free up space after many updates.

I do not have a CD / DVD Burner on this system and while I am aware that I can download Win-11 a .ISO will not do me much good.

Any input on setting up recovery, if need be, would beds greatly appreciated and thank you.

Actually, I do have one question. Why would I select "Create installation media for another PC,".

Hi,

Because it gives you the option to download the ISO or create installation media, even if it's for the same PC.

Hi,

You can either create a system image drive (a full backup of your Windows) or create a Windows installation drive on a USB flash drive using the Media Creation Tool.

Select "Download tool now" and then select "Run." You need to be an administrator to run this tool.

If you agree to the license terms, select "Accept."

On the "What do you want to do?" page, select "Create installation media for another PC," and then select "Next."

The application will automatically identify the correct version of Windows for your system.

Select the media you want to use (USB flash drive).

Create a USB recovery drive now while the PC is working. That is the built-in Windows option intended for recovery when Windows will not boot.

What it does:

Backs up essential system files needed to restore the PC.
Can help restore the device to its original state, even after a drive wipe or hard drive replacement.
Does not include personal files, so personal data should be backed up separately.

How to create it:

Insert an empty USB drive.
Open Start and search for Recovery Drive.
Select Recovery Drive.
Make sure Back up system files to the recovery drive is selected.
Select Next.
Choose the USB drive.
Select Next > Create.

Important notes:

The USB drive is erased during creation.
Microsoft recommends recreating the recovery media periodically so it includes newer updates.
If BitLocker is enabled, keep the BitLocker recovery key available because it is needed for many recovery options.

If Windows later will not start, the recovery path is:

Try System Restore from recovery options if available.
If that does not help, boot from the USB recovery drive and reinstall Windows.
If there is no recovery drive, create installation media on another working PC using a USB drive of at least 8 GB and reinstall Windows from that USB. This removes everything from the device.

For a Windows 11 Home PC without a CD/DVD burner, a USB recovery drive is the correct preparation step. The EFI partition is not the same as having separate reinstall media, and deleting $Windows.~BT does not prevent creating a proper recovery USB now.
