Why are you forcing users onto New Outlook when it lacks the same functionality as Old Outlook?

Users are slowly but surely being forced over to "New" Outlook, or basic Outlook as I like to call it due to its lack of useful functionality. Why is this policy happening when "New" Outlook doesn't include things like launching desktop applications in embedded links? Is Microsoft's plan to do away with desktop applications in the long run and this is a way to force people into using the feature poor web based version of the applications?

I find it baffling that you take a solid foundation that actually works, like Microsoft Outlook, create a web based version in a shell of a application wrapper and pretend it is a desktop app, but lacking the same functionality as the old application it is meant to be replacing. I am fed up with having to click on Editing button and "open in desktop app" for each SharePoint link that is shared with me via email. It is really frustrating and a waste of time. It wouldn't be so bad if the web apps were as good as the desktop apps but they aren't and I am getting fed up with this constant meddling with working apps and deprecation of features is alienating your users. Please don't keep treating us as alpha and beta testers of software.

    support for classic Outlook will continue until at least 2029 for users who installed it via perpetual licensing (such as Office LTSC) or Microsoft 365 subscription plans that include desktop apps. This extended support ensures that organizations relying on classic Outlook for business-critical workflows can continue using it safely and securely for several more years.

    I’m sorry for the frustration this has caused.

    I understand your concern regarding the current New Outlook experience, particularly the additional steps required to open SharePoint and Office documents in the desktop applications. At present, this behavior is a limitation of New Outlook, and some workflows that were available in classic Outlook are not yet available or do not function in the same way.

    Feedback submitted through the Feedback Portal is reviewed by the relevant product teams and helps influence future development priorities.

    Additionally, Microsoft has a roadmap item (Roadmap ID 557675) to allow users to share locally stored Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files directly through New Outlook for Windows, bringing back a workflow that previously relied on classic Outlook. Although this does not directly address the specific workflow you described today, it does demonstrate Microsoft's ongoing efforts to gradually bring features and scenarios from classic Outlook into New Outlook. Microsoft is introducing the new Outlook for Windows gradually, and the current Opt in phase gives users full flexibility to try it and move back to Classic Outlook whenever needed. 

    Please rest assured that Classic Outlook continues to be supported and is not being retired at this time. There is no announced date yet and Classic Outlook is expected to remain available through at least 2029.
