I can't open an Outlook contact card sent to me within Outlook.

My coworker used to send me a contact card and I could open it, edit, save, etc. Now New Outlook is only allowing me to save it to my computer or open it externally as a separate file. I have to think I am doing something wrong? I am using the desktop app. Please advise.

In new Outlook, the supported behavior for attachments is to Download or Save to OneDrive. For file types that are not edited directly in Outlook, the file must be downloaded and opened separately.

A contact card sent as a vCard is a .vcf file. The documented Outlook workflow to save it directly into Contacts is available in Outlook desktop/classic workflows and Outlook for Mac by opening the .vcf and then using Save & Close. That direct in-app contact save flow is not described for new Outlook in the provided documentation.

What can be done:

In the message, use the attachment dropdown and select Download.
Open the downloaded .vcf file.
If it opens as an Outlook contact window, select Save & Close to add it to Contacts.

If the file opens outside Outlook, that indicates the file association is going to another app. In that case, open the .vcf with Outlook and then save it from the contact window.

If the goal is to work with the contact fully inside Outlook without downloading first, that behavior is not documented for new Outlook in the provided sources. The current documented new Outlook attachment behavior is download/open externally, while direct contact saving from a .vcf is documented for other Outlook experiences.

Thank you for your help. What did your coworker do in order to be able to edit the contact? Did it open within Outlook? Or did they have to save it to OneDrive first?

My colleague just clicked on the contact card, it would take a few seconds to load from "Importing" to "Successfully opened contacts editor" then the contact card would open within Outlook like this:

I just had my coworker send me a contact so I could screenshot what was happening, but now I have this issue? Not sure what that means, but I cannot open the email from her. SiriusXM is the Subject line of the email.

Based on what I'm seeing, Outlook is currently reporting: "This item must be returned to its original folder before it can be viewed."

This appears to be different from the original contact card editing issue we were investigating. The email itself is currently unable to open, which would prevent Outlook from accessing the attached contact card.

As a quick test, could you check if you are able to locate and open the same message in Outlook on the Web (OWA)?

Also, please ask your coworker to close Outlook, open Outlook again and send another contact card in a brand-new email and let me know whether you're able to open that message normally. If the new message opens successfully, it would indicate that the original email item may have become corrupted or was moved from its original location.

I was unable to open that email in the OWA.

My coworker sent a new contact.

When I click the dropdown menu on the contact, the options are Preview, Open, Save to OneDrive, Copy, or Save As. When I select Open, I get this pop-up.

When I select Open, it brings me to the opened contact, but I am only seeing the Notes portion (which I can't show for security), but this is the menu above that isn't allowing me to save as a contact card.

......

The other route I tried is to just click the contact attachment. It opens and again I can only view the notes portion. These are the options I am presented with at that point

When I select Open in Desktop App, I get this error:

If I select Save As, it takes me to save it as a computer file.

...I think this is a full picture of what I am looking at. Let me know if you need more info

I'm a volunteer moderator on this site, and I'm looking at your deleted message. I can see that it was labelled as spam, which is obviously is incorrect. The spam filter on this site is sometimes a little over-zealous. But maybe it has to be, because the spammers can also be quite zealous.

Anyway, I am not really happy with your message. There is information in the screenshots I don't think you should share in public. There is a name of a person, and I don't know about that name that starts with Mont. Maybe that is harmless, but maybe it's nothing you should expose in public that you are communicating with. I realise that it took you quite some time produce that post, but I would prefer if you made a new attempt with sensitive information masked. It is quite possible that a second attempt also will be trapped by the spam filter, but hopefully I or some other moderator will be able to resurrect it.

From the screenshots, I noticed that the attachment appears to be opening as an .eml (E-mail Message) file rather than directly as a contact card (.vcf). This may explain why you're seeing options related to opening an email message and why the experience differs from the contact card behavior my colleague and I tested.

To help me better understand how the contact is being shared, could you please confirm a few details:

When your coworker sends the contact, what exact steps are they using to share it?

Are they selecting Share as vCard from their Contacts?

Or are they forwarding/sending it as another type of attachment?

Have you had a chance to test using the Share as vCard option specifically? If not, could you ask your coworker to:

Open the contact in Outlook

Select Share as vCard

Send the generated .vcf attachment in a new email

Then test opening that attachment

The reason I'm asking is that both my colleague and I were able to successfully open, edit, and save contacts when working with a vCard (.vcf) attachment.

Once I understand exactly how the contact is being shared and whether the attachment is .eml or .vcf, I should have a much clearer picture of whether you're dealing with a contact-sharing method issue, an Outlook client behavior, or something specific to the attachment format.
