A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
If OneDrive still shows as full after deleting large files and emptying the Recycle Bin, the supported next steps are:
- Check what is still counted against storage.
- In OneDrive on the web, open Manage your OneDrive storage or select the Storage used link.
- Review the largest files list to confirm what is still using space.
- For work or school accounts, the OneDrive website also shows storage used on the left navigation, and selecting the usage value opens the largest files view.
- Confirm the Recycle Bin is fully cleared.
- Items in the Recycle Bin still count toward the quota.
- After deleting items, storage availability may take a short time to update.
- Check whether files were deleted from the correct place.
- If files were in the OneDrive folder, deleting them removes them from both OneDrive and the computer.
- If files were only moved outside the OneDrive folder, they stop syncing but may not reduce cloud storage unless they were actually removed from OneDrive.
- Look for other common causes.
- A shared folder added to OneDrive can make the account go over storage.
- If using a personal Microsoft account, an expired subscription or expired promotional storage can reduce the quota.
- If using a work or school account, the organization may have exceeded its pooled storage limit.
- If local disk space is the problem instead of cloud quota, use OneDrive’s local cleanup options.
- Open OneDrive Settings > Account > Choose folders to stop syncing unwanted folders.
- After sync completes, right-click files or folders and choose Clear space to make them online-only.
- This frees computer disk space, not OneDrive cloud storage.
- If the storage number still does not change, wait briefly and recheck.
- There can be a delay before deleted files and emptied Recycle Bin are reflected in available storage.
- If this is a work or school account and it still stays full, contact the organization’s IT admin.
- They may need to check permissions, storage allocation, or whether the tenant has exceeded pooled storage.
What to expect when OneDrive is over quota:
- New files cannot be uploaded, edited, or synced.
- Existing files remain, but may be read-only.
- For personal accounts, if the account stays over quota for 6 months, files may be deleted and become non-recoverable.
