I created a work account. Subscribed to M365 Business. When I went to log in the account has been moved to 'personal' and i have no access to my Work account or my M365 Business subscription. What's happened!?

Hi @Keith O'toole,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Typically, when you subscribe to a Microsoft Business plan, you will not use a personal account to sign in. Instead, Microsoft will provide you with a Work/School account to use this subscription.

For example: ******@xxx.onmicrosoft.com.

At the same time, Microsoft will also send you an email containing this information to the personal email address you used to sign up for the service.

Please check the inbox of the email account you used to register for this plan and see whether you have received any emails from Microsoft.

I hope this information is helpful

If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments on this post so I can continue to support you.

I look forward to continuing the conversation.

    Hello

I need to know, where specifically did you log in?

Is it via a Windows settings page, if so, which page?

Or is it in the Office apps?

Or a certain website, if so, what URL did you use?

The account itself has not been “converted” from work to personal. What has happened is a sign-in and account-type mix-up between:

    • A personal Microsoft account (MSA), and
    • A Microsoft Entra work or school account (used for Microsoft 365 Business).

Key points from the behavior described:

    1. Work/school vs personal accounts are separate
      • A Microsoft account is for personal services like Outlook.com, Xbox, Skype, OneDrive (personal), etc.
      • A Microsoft Entra work or school account is created by or for an organization and is what backs a Microsoft 365 Business subscription.
      • There is no synchronization of user info or licenses between personal and work/school accounts.
    2. Same email address can exist as both account types
      • It is possible to have:
        • A personal Microsoft account using an email address, and
        • A work/school account in Microsoft Entra ID with the same email address.
      • When signing in, Microsoft will ask “Which account do you want to use?” if both exist.
      • If the personal account is chosen where a business service expects a work/school account, access to the Microsoft 365 Business subscription will not appear, and it can look like the account has become “personal”.
    3. Business subscriptions are tied to work/school accounts
      • Microsoft 365 Business products are usually associated with a work or school account.
      • If sign-in is done with a personal account instead of the work/school identity that holds the license, the Microsoft 365 Business subscription will not be visible or usable.
    4. Why it looks like the work account became personal
      • If a personal Microsoft account was created or used with the same email address as the work account, sign-in flows for consumer services may default to or highlight the personal account.
      • If the wrong account type is selected during sign-in, Microsoft 365 Business services will not recognize the license, giving the impression that the work account “turned into” a personal one.

What to do next (high level, based on the documented patterns):

    • Ensure sign-in is done explicitly as a work or school account (Microsoft Entra ID) when accessing Microsoft 365 Business services (for example via https://www.office.com/login as a work/school account).
    • If a “Which account do you want to use?” prompt appears, choose the Work or school account, not the personal account.
    • If necessary, rename the personal Microsoft account (for example by changing its primary alias) so that it no longer uses the same email address as the work account. This removes the constant “Which account” conflict.
    • If sign-in to the work account fails or the subscription still does not appear, follow the “can’t sign in to work or school account” guidance or contact the Microsoft 365 admin/support for the tenant where the Business subscription was purchased.

Nothing in the documentation indicates that Microsoft automatically converts a work account into a personal account or moves a Microsoft 365 Business subscription to a personal profile. The issue is almost always that sign-in is happening with the wrong account type when both exist for the same email address.
