Right-click “Send to Mail Recipient” does not work in New Outlook

Is there any way to fix this where I can right-click a document on my desktop and attach it to a New Outlook mail other than hit “share”? This is very frustrating for me as I have a lot of court documents that I keep in a folder on my desktop that are just easier to attach in an email from the desktop. Thank you.

    Hi @Irene Bevilacqua,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Regarding your question about attaching files in the New Outlook (instead of right-clicking a file and selecting Share), you can use one of the following methods:

First you could try to drag the file from desktop to the email that you are drafting, so you don't need to click share the file.

This will automatically attach the file to your email without needing to use the Share option. User's image Option 2 is that you go to insert tab, then choose to attach file by "Browse this computer" User's image Then browse the file on your desktop and insert it in. User's image

New Outlook for Windows does not support being used as a MAPI mail client, which is what the Windows “Send to → Mail recipient” right‑click option relies on. Because of this architectural limitation, the context menu action cannot send a file directly to New Outlook.

    The available workarounds are:

    1. Use Classic Outlook as the default mail client
      • Classic Outlook is MAPI‑compliant and will work with “Send to → Mail recipient.”
      • Switch back to Classic Outlook using the toggle in the top‑right of Outlook (if available) and set Classic Outlook as the default mail app in Windows.
    2. Attach from inside New Outlook instead
      • Open New Outlook.
      • Create a new message.
      • Use Attach File on the Message tab and choose:
        • Browse This Computer to pick the document from the desktop folder, or
        • A OneDrive/SharePoint location if the files are stored in the cloud.

There is currently no fix that makes the Windows right‑click “Send to Mail recipient” command work directly with New Outlook; using Classic Outlook or attaching from within New Outlook are the supported options.
