The banner usually appears when Microsoft 365 thinks the current subscription is limited or has a pending change, even if payment is up to date.
First, confirm that the subscription is correctly active for the signed‑in account:
- Go to the Microsoft account services page and check that the Microsoft 365 subscription shows as active for the same account used in the apps.
- In any Office app, open the account information (for example, File → Account) and verify that the same Microsoft account is shown under “User Information.” If not, sign out and sign back in with the account that has the active subscription.
If the banner text mentions a subscription issue such as “Couldn’t verify subscription” or “ACCOUNT NOTICE / UPDATE REQUIRED,” follow the matching steps:
- If the message is “Couldn’t Verify Subscription”:
- Connect the device to the internet.
- In the warning dialog or bar, select Retry so Office can re‑check the subscription status.
- If the message is “ACCOUNT NOTICE. Your Microsoft 365 subscription has a pending change” or “UPDATE REQUIRED. Your Microsoft 365 subscription has a pending change”:
- Open any Office app and, when the Account Notice dialog appears, select Update.
- Sign in if prompted.
- Allow Office to download and apply updates. The conversion runs in the background and may uninstall the old Office build as part of the process.
If the organization (for business subscriptions) has recently switched plans and Office is not updated as above, the apps can eventually show (Unlicensed Product) and go into reduced functionality mode. Updating or reinstalling Office to match the new plan removes the banner.
If none of these apply and the subscription is confirmed active and verified, use the unlicensed‑product troubleshooting path mentioned in the documentation or contact Microsoft support from the account or support pages so they can check the subscription and activation state on the account.
