MS Outlook app on iPhone not opening attachments

I am using an iPhone 17 Pro Max, iOS version 26.3.1. My problem is that attachments - any type - will not open in MS Outlook mobile app. I have tried resetting the app, deleting and reinstalling, - nothing works. My email provider is Xfinity. All of the same attachments will open in the resident email application on my phone, or if I go to the Xfinity web mail account, everything works perfect. When I try to open in Outlook, the little status arrow spins and spins, then eventually displays a message that "couldn't load file". If I retry, same result. Has anyone had the same issue and found a solution? Thanks

    Hi Don Wittke,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand how frustrating this can be, especially since the same attachments open without any issue in other apps and in Xfinity webmail.

Because Outlook for iOS downloads attachments only when you tap them (instead of keeping them automatically downloaded), anything that interrupts that download/preview step can lead to the “couldn’t load file” message.

To help narrow this down without repeating the reset/reinstall steps you already did, please try the checks below:

1, Test on a different network (quick isolation check)

Switch from Wi‑Fi to cellular data (or vice versa) and try opening the same attachment again. If it works on one network but not the other, the issue is likely network-related rather than file-related.

2, Temporarily disable VPN / security filtering (if enabled) and retry

If your iPhone is using a VPN or any network filtering app, turn it off briefly and test again. This can help confirm whether the download request is being interrupted.

3, Use “Share” to save the attachment first

In Outlook, open the message, tap the attachment, then use Share to Save to Files (or choose another app). If saving works but previewing does not, that points to Outlook’s preview flow rather than the attachment download itself.

4, Remove and re-add the Xfinity account inside Outlook

Even after reinstalling, it can help to refresh the account connection directly in Outlook: remove the Xfinity account from Outlook, restart the iPhone, then add the account back and test opening attachments again.

5, Contact Outlook for iOS support from within the app (next step if the issue continues)

This route goes to the team that supports the Outlook mobile app experience and can review app-side details. Microsoft’s support article shows how to reach them from Outlook for iOS: tap your profile photo, select the "?" icon, then choose Contact Support. I hope the steps above help you get attachments opening normally again - please let me know what you find after trying them.
