Windows device isn't recognised by family safety

Our family laptop isn't recognised by Family Safety for one of my children's accounts. I have three kids, the other two have worked no problem but the third account will not register the laptop. I have registered a different laptop with this child account as a test (it works). I have removed and re-added the child account to family safety, I have deleted and reinstalled the child account on the laptop, I have switched between making it a local and a Microsoft account but nothing has worked. The laptop is registering as a device on the child's Microsoft account (I deleted it and registered it again to test it) and I am signed in to the Family Safety app on the laptop with the child account logged in, but it still isn't registering on the parent family safety.

It sounds like you've already taken several troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue with the Family Safety app not recognizing the laptop for your child's account. Here are a few additional suggestions that might help:

    1. Check for Updates: Ensure that both the Family Safety app and Windows are fully updated. Sometimes, issues can arise from outdated software.
    2. Sign Out and Back In: Try signing out of the Family Safety app on the laptop and then signing back in. This can sometimes refresh the connection.
    3. Check Account Permissions: Make sure that the child account has the necessary permissions set in Family Safety. Sometimes, settings can inadvertently restrict device recognition.
    4. Network Connection: Ensure that the laptop is connected to the internet, as Family Safety requires an active connection to sync devices.
    5. Device Limitations: Verify if there are any limitations on the number of devices that can be registered under a single child account.
    6. Contact Support: If none of these steps work, consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for further assistance, as they may have more specific troubleshooting steps for your situation.

These steps should help you further diagnose the issue with the Family Safety app not recognizing the laptop for your child's account.

Hello Poppy Jewitt, welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

If your child's device isn't showing in Family Safety, here are some more fixes you could try:

    1. Force device sync (on child's laptop):
      • Settings > Accounts > Sync your settings > turn sync ON
      • Click Sync now
    2. Verify account type:
      • Settings > Accounts > Your info
      • Ensure it shows a Microsoft account email (not "Local Account")
      • If local, switch to Microsoft account
    3. Remove and re-add child:
      • On parent device: Settings > Accounts > Family & other users
      • Remove child, restart both devices, re-add child
    4. Install Family Safety app on child's laptop:
      • Download Microsoft Family Safety app on the laptop itself
      • Sign in with child's account to trigger device registration
    5. Check family.microsoft.com:
      • Sign in > Devices tab (can take up to 24 hours to appear)

    Hi,

Im having the same problem. My son just got a new computer and i have none of my own. So i created a admin account for me and made him a user on the computer.

In step 3, should I remove my child in family group or the account from the computer? (so he cannot login)
