style separator causes heading number to disappear. Even when hidden "Hidden Paragraph marker" method causes the heading number to disappear

This has been fixed as of Release 2602, at least.

From the support page:

STATUS: FIXED This issue has been fixed by a service change.  For users still seeing the issue, please close all open Office apps and re-open Word to ensure the change has been picked up.
