I understand why you're worried. Before closing the account, I’d recommend trying to recover it first so the hacker can’t keep using it. You can start here: https://account.live.com/acsr

If you regain access, change your password, check your recovery email and phone number, and sign out of other devices. If you still want to close the account, Microsoft has instructions here: https://support.microsoft.com/account-billing

Keep in mind that closing your Microsoft account can also affect other services linked to it, such as OneDrive, Xbox, and Skype.

i have already set it to close in 60 days due 26 Feb 2026 however is there a quicker way to terminate the account immediately? tx kk

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this. There is no way to instantly delete or terminate a Microsoft/Hotmail account immediately.

This waiting period is built in for security reasons and unfortunately can’t be shortened.

That said, since your goal is safety, here are a few important steps you can take right now so you don’t need to open or use the account anymore:

    • Do not sign in again unless absolutely necessary. The closure will continue as long as you don’t cancel it.
    • If you can safely access it once more, change the password, sign out of all sessions, and remove recovery emails/phone numbers you don’t recognize.
    • Check and remove any linked services or third-party apps (social media, banking, shopping accounts) that use that email, and update those services with a new, secure email address.

Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

To close your Hotmail account (which is now part of Outlook.com), you can follow these steps:

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft Account Close Portal with your Hotmail account.
    2. Read the list of actions you should take before closing your account and complete any that apply to you.
    3. Once you have completed the necessary pre-close actions, select Next.
    4. Acknowledge that you understand the consequences of closing your account and then select Mark account for closure.

Your account will be closed in 30 days, during which time you can reopen it if you change your mind. After this period, your account and all associated data will be permanently deleted.

Make sure to back up any important data before proceeding with the closure.
