Cannot share to do list

I created a list and am unable to share it with my wife. We are both logged in with personal (not work) accounts. When I create the shared link and send it to her she gets the error: Can’t join list It looks like this list isn’t available. Try contacting the person who invited you.

when she sends me a list invite link I see the same error message.

We each both get a notification on our PC that the other has joined, but then they are immediately removed and no longer shared.

We have tried deleting the list and trying again. we have tried stopping sharing and resharing. we have tried logging out and in, we have tried incognito browser sessions. we tried uninstalling the app and reinstalling and the result is the same, on desktop, web, and mobile.

I'm positive it's a problem with my Microsoft ACCOUNT and not the app, but support keeps telling me to just "login with my microsoft account" and it will resolve the issue. to do support sent me to outlook support saying it's a problem with my account, outlook support sent me back to to do support saying it's a problem with my account.

so what the F am I supposed to do here? there is clearly an issue with my microsoft account because this isn't the only service that is giving me issues. I can't open shared one note notebooks from my family either.

how am I supposed to get actual support for this problem? I am seriously done with microsoft, and am working to migrate exclusively to google services as I'm so sick of nothing working when all I'm trying to do is use BASIC FEATURES of the platform and getting absolutely NO SUPPORT for a service I'm PAYING FOR.

    Hello SelAromDotNet,

Thank you for reaching out in Microsoft Q&A forum

I understand how frustrating it is that you and your wife can’t share a simple To Do list even after trying multiple devices, browsers, and reinstalling the app.

Sometimes a personal account can silently become a connected work/school account (for example after using Outlook.com with a domain or using Azure/Teams in the past). Please ask both of you to visit this page: https://account.microsoft.com/profile. If you see anything mentioning Work or school account, Azure, or Entra ID, that can block To Do sharing.

Since sharing To Do lists relies on Microsoft consumer identity services, please check: https://family.microsoft.com/. If:

    • either of you appears twice
    • one account shows “pending”
    • or you are not in the same family group

To Do sharing can fail exactly as you described. If so, remove the family group and re‑add it.

Another solution for you to try is reset To Do sharing permissions: Microsoft To Do uses the Tasks service under Outlook.com. Please try:

    1. Go to https://outlook.live.com/tasks/
    2. Delete the problematic shared list from there
    3. Sign out on all devices then wait 2–3 minutes
    4. Create a brand‑new list from this webpage
    5. Share it again

This forces Outlook’s task service to re-register the list correctly.

Let me know how it goes.
