how we get our admin credentials when our admin person passed away

Dear Microsoft Support Team,

We urgently need assistance to recover access to our Microsoft 365 Admin Center.

Our only Global Administrator, who was responsible for the Microsoft 365 admin control panel, has unfortunately passed away. All admin credentials and MFA (two-step verification) were linked to his email account, which we can no longer access.

We attempted to reset the password. The first verification step works, but the second verification code is being sent to the deceased person’s email address, which is inaccessible to us. Therefore, we cannot complete the recovery flow.

We request that Microsoft initiate a tenant recovery process and grant Global Administrator access to the following account:

[Moderator note: personal info removed]

We can fully verify ownership of the organization and domain. We hold all supporting documents, including:

  • Domain control credentials for: [Moderator note: personal info removed] and [Moderator note: personal info removed]
  • Business registration documents
  • Identity documents of the authorized person

We are ready to add DNS TXT records or provide any documents required to prove ownership.

Kindly escalate this case to the Data Protection / Tenant Recovery Team, as we are completely locked out of the Microsoft 365 admin center due to MFA being tied to the deceased admin.

We appreciate your urgent support.

Thank you, [Moderator note: personal info removed] IT Manager

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to us regarding your situation I understand how challenging and urgent this must be for your organization and I truly empathize with the difficulty of losing a key administrator while needing to maintain access to critical services.

The reason you are experiencing this issue is that Microsoft 365 uses strong identity verification and MFA to protect tenant data which means recovery requires confirming ownership of the account and domain. Since the Global Administrator account and MFA were tied to the deceased person’s email the standard self-service recovery flow cannot be completed.

The resolution in this case is to initiate a tenant recovery process through Microsoft Support. You will need to submit a support request from the Microsoft 365 admin help page and select the option “I can’t sign in or access my tenant.” Microsoft will then guide you through identity verification steps which typically include providing official business documentation, proof of domain ownership and identity documents of an authorized person. You may also be asked to add a DNS TXT record to confirm domain control. Once verified Microsoft can help you regain access and assign a new Global Administrator.

Could you confirm if you have already submitted a support request and gathered all the required documents for verification?

I hope this answer is helpful if you have further questions feel free to reply back

Regards,

Marcelo

    Hi @IT Builtrite,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.

First, I want to express my sincere condolences for your loss. I completely understand how challenging and urgent this situation is for your organization, especially when critical access to your Microsoft 365 tenant is tied to the account of someone who has passed away. Thank you for providing detailed information and being prepared with verification documents.

Since your only Global Administrator has passed away, please follow the steps below to complete the account recovery process and regain access.

Option 1: Contact Microsoft Data Protection Support by Phone (Primary Method)

To regain access to your admin account as you can't access the Admin Portal, you can try reaching out to our Global Customer Service phone to raise a request for resetting your authentication method here: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support. During the call, request to speak to an agent, and share with them every detail related to your query and also mention that you are the only admin lost access to your account. This should allow you to contact the appropriate team so you can solve this incident as soon as possible.

Here are some tips and an example of a prompt to help you navigate the IVR more effectively:

In some countries, it is an automated conversation like:

IVR: What kind of problem are you concerned about?

    You: Authenticator.

IVR: What kind of product do you use?

    You: Office 365 for business.

IVR confirmation: education or company account?

    You: For companies

    IVR: Are you an administrator?

    You: Yes.

IVR: Do you have another administrator in your organization?

    You: No.

IVR: Do you need a... Service request?

You: Yes. I need to create a ticket. Please send me direct to the Data Protection Team.

Option 2: Create a Temporary Account (Trial Tenant) to Submit a Support Ticket (Alternative Method)

If you still cannot reach to a live agent, there is still a workaround, you might consider registering for a new tenant by signing up for a trial subscription via this link Microsoft 365 Business Plans and Pricing | Microsoft 365. This would allow you to create a new tenant following the prompts provided. Once set up, you can access the admin console of the new tenant and submit a support ticket requesting to speak with the Data Protection team on behalf of your previous tenant.

Please note that forum moderators do not have access to user account settings and cannot assist with logging in, resetting passwords, or changing access rights. While we do not have access to internal systems or administrative tools required to resolve account-specific or backend-related issues but we’ll continue doing our best to support you within the scope of our responsibilities.

Note: I strongly recommend setting up at least two Global Administrators once you regain access to your account. This helps prevent unexpected situations in the future and ensures you always have a backup for critical administrative tasks.

I hope this helps you regain access to your account quickly. I'm glad to assist and truly hope the information provided has been useful. Please feel free to reach out anytime if you need further assistance.

To recover access to your Microsoft 365 Admin Center after the passing of your only Global Administrator, you will need to follow Microsoft's identity verification processes. Here are the steps you can take:

    1. Confirm Account Usage: Ensure you are using the correct account to attempt recovery. Try signing in with any previously used email account.
    2. Submit a Support Request: If you cannot access your tenant, submit a support request through the Microsoft 365 support page. Select I can't sign in or access my tenant. You may need to verify your identity and ownership of the organization using:
      • Official business documentation.
      • Domain ownership.
      • Publicly listed nonprofit registration data.
    3. Contact IT Partner: If a Microsoft partner created or manages your tenant, reach out to their support team for recovery assistance.

Unfortunately, Microsoft for Nonprofits cannot bypass identity verification or provide tenant access directly. All tenant ownership and access decisions are handled through Microsoft 365 support, so it’s crucial to follow the outlined recovery methods.

Prepare to provide the necessary documentation you mentioned, such as domain control credentials and business registration documents, to facilitate the recovery process.
