My Microsoft student account is locked due to the Authenticator MFA loop. I cannot receive any verification code and cannot add my account to Authenticator. I need an MFA reset for my student account in Azure AD.

Hello,

I am experiencing an "MFA Loop" issue with my student account and I cannot log in.

Here is the situation: 1. I know my password and username. 2. When I try to log in, it asks me to verify via the Microsoft Authenticator app. 3. However, my account is NOT currently set up in the Authenticator app on my phone (I likely changed phones or deleted the app). 4. When I try to add my account to the Authenticator app, it asks me to approve the sign-in via the app itself. Since I cannot get into the app, I cannot approve it.

I am completely stuck. I cannot receive SMS or use any other method because the system forces the Authenticator app.

How can I resolve this loop? Do I need to contact my university's IT admin to reset my MFA settings?

Thank you.

Hello @Yadulla Mirzayev,

Thank you for posting your valuable question on Microsoft Q&A forum.

Please understand that our forum is a public platform, and we will modify your question to cover your personal information including your organization domain name in the description. Please notice to hide these personal or organization information next time you post error or some information to protect personal data.

Based on the details you shared, your account is likely configured with only one MFA method (Authenticator app), and that method is no longer accessible.

As you have a student account, I would recommend you contact your organization account's Admin to reset your MFA settings through the Microsoft Entra Admin Center.

If you haven’t yet reached out, here’s a helpful guide to locate your Microsoft 365 administrator: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

Here are some key points to keep in mind:

You start by contacting the person who originally provided your account, such as a teacher, school administrator, or IT support staff. They can verify permissions, confirm your group membership, and check for restrictions. If unsure who to reach out to, begin with a teacher or staff member you regularly interact with; they can assist or direct you to the right department. Additionally, use your school’s helpdesk portal, support email, or tech support channel for assistance.

Ask your administrator to follow these steps:

  • Go to Microsoft Entra Admin Center: https://entra.microsoft.com
  • Navigate to Users > All Users.
  • Select your user account.
  • Go to Authentication Methods.
  • Click "Require re-register multifactor authentication".

This will reset your MFA settings. The next time you sign in, you’ll be prompted to set up the Authenticator app again using a QR code.

I hope Data Protection team can successfully revoke your access. If you need any further assistance or need help on any process, please feel free to reply. I'm here to help!

Thank you for your kindness and understanding so far!
