Sending emails from Outlook to OneNote through apps functions is not working

Yesterday the function that I use in Outlook to send an email directly to a OneNote notebook section stopped working. I receive the following message:

We're sorry. We couldn't create your page. Please try again later. Details

Error: Cannot save this item to a shared notebook due to sensitivity label restrictions. Please save it to personal notebook.

Date: 2025-10-03T11:22:09.626ZSession ID: PII removed.

I reached out to my companies helpdesk IT and received the following response

After a bit of research it looks as though Microsoft did something in their security or updates that may have broke this feature. We dont have any policies set in place that would effect the ability to use that feature. So unfortunately there isn't much we can do as far as that goes

Could this have occurred from MS end? The email workaround doesn't seem to work

User has reported the same issue at our organization and below workarounds do not work. Doesn't matter if sensitivity label is changed to lower and doesn't matter where you save the file it doesn't let you.

I have the report of the same thing.
Using the Classic version of Outlook, there is no error but the New Outlook has this error.

This doesn't matter if the user have the Meeting as Public or Private

I'm having the same issue as of 10/1. First solution, will not work since it's for work. Second, I'm getting the error when using the add-in. Third, there was not issue with the sensitivity levels according our IT.

I am having the same issue when using Outlook on the Web. However, I was able to use the desktop application to send the message to OneNote.

I rarely use the desktop application and would like to see Microsoft investigate this issue as the workaround did not resolve the problem I am having in the web version.

I have the same issue when using either web or desktop versions with my company account. However, it works ok when I use my own outlook.com account and a onenote notebook connected to my private Office365 account. My company denies that they have made any changes. It would be really good to get this back!

I have the exact same problem over the past few days. Send to onenote feature is not working due to sensitivity labels. In the meanime, I have no sensitinity labels applied at all !! But the feature is still working in classic outlook using the old send to onenote option. I really hope a fix is coming soon!

The proposed solution to store in a personal onenote is crap, because we work together in teams in a transparent way... thus the feature we use daily several times is not here anymore and we have to search for more complicated new workflows... please make it work again

I have ended up using the print to OneNote option instead. I have to add a title manually, but it at least works to get items to OneNote until this is resolved.

You can still use the old add-in for send to onenote which is anailiable only in classic outlook. This add-in also has a slightly diferrent icon (the N is bigger).

I realize this is tagged for Windows, but I am experiencing the same thing on a Mac (Sonoma 14.8), FWIW. I first noticed it on 10/2; worked fine for me on 10/1.

Error occurs in OWA, Outlook for Mac (Version 16.101.2 (25092825), and Outlook for Mac (Legacy setting) when using Send to OneNote from an email or calendar event to any notebook whether tied to my user account or a shared Teams notebook within my org's tenant.

I can confirm there are no sensitivity labels configured in Purview. As another user mentioned, Send to OneNote worked from a personal outlook.com account, but that's not a workaround for my situation.

Same issue. Do we know if there is a fix (planned) besides using "Classic" Outlook? Hate to tell the MacOS users to go back to the old, outdated Outlook version on those clients.

Edit: Scratch going back to MacOS. Sarah V confirmed it doesn't work on the legacy client.

Per this thread, Microsoft can repro the issue & have confirmed its a bug they need to fix.
I've opened a case to them myself but am waiting a response from an engineer.

This is working for me as well. OneNote is in my list of printers when I choose to print the email, and then a OneNote pop-up asks you what section to put it in. It looks like a PDF or image printout, so if you need to be able to edit or copy/paste text in OneNote later, it might not meet your needs.

Same issue, but I am confused about the proposed workaround. I am getting the error when saving to my personal OneNote in OneDrive (not shared), so it doesn't appear to truly be an issue with shared OneNote notebooks.

I have resorted to using this feature, but it is not ideal.

I use OneNote for my meeting notes, topic thoughts (journal), and task execution history (research and actions done to complete an assigned task). I organize all these items into functional, project, and client notebooks/sections. I move important Outlook emails to OneNote to have one place for all my notes.

Printing emails to OneNote allows me to save the readable content, but any attachments are lost.

A workaround that I found works for this is to switch to Outlook (classic) and right click on the email to send to OneNote. User has been able to send to OneNote using this method with no issues.

I found out how to fix it from looking at why add-ins was greyed out. go to settings/securiyt/privacy and you MUST SELECT the connected learning item and restart outlook or the send to onenote will NOT SHOW UP on your toolbar and be available to send emails or calendars invites to onenote.

Update (10/8): A fix has been deployed to the service for this issue. Affected users should start seeing it being resolved for them in the next 24-48 hours.

10/7: This is a known issue and Microsoft is working to further investigate it for a possible fix.

Users can't send email or calendar events to OneNote through the "Send to OneNote" add-in in any Outlook client

When users attempt to save an email or calendar event, they receive a message that states, "Error: Cannot save this item to a shared notebook due to sensitivity label restrictions. Please save it to personal notebook."

Current status: Our review of the collected failing request IDs and service logs has determined that this issue may be related to a recent change which enables stricter compliance regulations. We’re further analyzing this change to confirm our suspicions into the underlying cause of impact which will help guide our troubleshooting steps.

Functionality won't work in regular or legacy Outlook, or even online. Really annoying, ticket raised with Microsoft support. They say it's been fixed, still not working, re-reported... now no response..

Sorry for hijacking this thread, but I'm getting errors when starting a new one.

After an upgrade to Version 2509 (Build 19231.20156 Click-to-Run) and seemingly just like this email-to bug, my problem just started last week.

When attempting to add Outlook Meeting Details to OneNote, none of the meetings are displayed. No error messages, just a change in behavior.
Is this intentional because of the new "stricter compliance regulations", a coincidence, or the same/similar bug?
