I have files in One Drive folders that say they're available when online, but I can't access them. I am online. Why can't I open them or attach them to emails?

Holly Mikkelson, it could be due to sync issues, network restrictions, or OneDrive not downloading the file properly. Try right clicking the file and selecting “Always keep on this device” to force it to download. You can also try to use your OneDrive web by going to onedrive.live.com.
Thank you. That solved my immediate problem, but do I have to do that with every file?
Holly Mikkelson, you don’t have to manually select “Always keep on this device” for every file. If you frequently use files from a specific folder, you can right-click the entire folder and choose “Always keep on this device” to automatically download all current and future files in that folder. Alternatively, you can adjust your OneDrive settings by clicking the cloud icon in your system tray, going to Settings > Sync and backup > Advanced settings, and modifying the Files On-Demand options to make files available offline by default.

My symptom was that only files opened or created since migrating to a new desktop PC 1 month ago could be opened ok, but all else got me the 'available when online' message even though everything had been fine when the migration finished - and I was online and the files (in Word, Excel and pdf) could be opened in the Edge browser using OneDrive>View online. I followed the helpful advice above, and every file then showed as Synch pending instead, although I was still online. Left it like that when I went out, when I came back 3 hours later the cloud and syncing icons had gone but the files were not on this device and trying to open them from the cloud gives me a message about permissions, disk space or using a text recovery converter. Trying not to panic here! Any insight appreciated.
Have spotted that a new version of MS Office 16 was installed automatically 2 days ago. We did not get informed of the update at the time. Could that be something to do with this?
