To whom it may concern. Our customer is using Windows 11 with Microsoft 365 Office Current Channel v2411 build 18227.201162.

When we try to send a Microsoft Word document by selecting > Share > Email send as Attachment

I get the message - "Either there is no default mail. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client".

Outlook is already set as a default client in the default Apps option and the default applications by the protocol are already set as MAILTO Protocol in the default Apps option to Outlook (new). Please assist.

The “New Outlook is just a re-badged version of Windows Mail and like its predecessor, it is not MAPI compliant and cannot be used to send messages from any of the other Office applications (Access, Excel, Word).

The Outlook Product Team have advised that there are no plans to add MAPI compliance to the "New Outlook", which I suspect is because it is not possible to do so.

    Dear Paul Laubscher,

Thank you for your response and for trying the suggested troubleshooting steps.

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused and for the initial guidance not resolving the issue. I tried replicating the scenario and found the same behavior. Even when the default mail app is set to a different one (e.g., Outlook (new)), Microsoft Word consistently defaults to using "Outlook (classic)" as the mail client.

It seems this behavior is the product design when using the "Email send as Attachment" feature in Word. As a workaround, we suggest using the "Send to" option instead. This provides more flexibility, allowing you to add all your mail apps or just Outlook (new). You can then choose your preferred client each time you want to share a document.

    • First put the mail program icon(new outlook) on the desktop
    • Then go to: C:\Users\your name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo
    • Then drag the mail program into the SendTo folder.
    • Now click "send to", you should see the new ou

We appreciate your understanding, and I hope this alternative meets your needs. Should you have any further questions or require additional assistance, please let us know.

Thank you for your time and patience, and we hope you have a great day!

    Best regards,

GroupWise is a messaging and collaboration platform from OpenText that supports email, calendaring, personal information management, instant messaging. The GroupWise platform consists of desktop client software, which is available for Windows, (formerly Mac OS X, and Linux), and the server software, which is supported on Windows Server and Linux. Exactly the same as Outlook but only more features and is more stable. This is not a GroupWise problem but a Microsoft Windows 11 problem.
