Hello all,

We are considering migrating from Google Workspace to Microsoft 365. And one of the things we'll need to migrate is Google Classroom. Questions are:

  1. Can we migrate Google Classroom to Microsoft Teams? If yes, is there any specific Teams service/license we need to have?
  2. What migration tool to use?

You would probably want to engage a Microsoft education partner in your country with this project.

It is not merely moving data from one platform to another, but it is also teaching your academics and administrators this new platform, to both use it, and to teach with it. This platform can be quite different from what they are used to.

What to move depends on what data you have on Google as well.

As the education SKUs of both Google and Microsoft are slightly different from their main stream commercial slanted counterparts, having an experienced partner may ease the pain of migration, but I am not sure how many are experienced in both Google Education and Microsoft Education.

Do contact your local Microsoft in country office to get some recommendations of Microsoft education partners.

    Cheers

    Hi Mia,

    Appreciate your response on this.

Does Microsoft have any recommended third-party migration tools for Google Classroom content to Teams?

    Thank you.

    Dear respected Janeca Romero,

    1. Yes, it is possible to migrate from Google Classroom to Microsoft Teams. However, it is important to note that the two platforms have different features and functionalities, so not all content may transfer over seamlessly. As for licensing, you will need a Microsoft 365 Education license to use Teams for Education. See: Microsoft 365 for Education | Microsoft Education
    2. Microsoft provides some migration methods that can help with the migration process. See:

Perform a Google Workspace migration to Microsoft 365 or Office 365 | Microsoft Learn

Switch from Google Workspace to Microsoft 365 for business - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn

Set up Microsoft 365 for Google Workspace migration - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn

These can migrate email, calendar, and contacts from Google Workspace to Microsoft 365, but it does not currently support the migration of Google Classroom content to Teams. However, there are third-party tools available that can assist with this process.

I hope this information helps! Let me know if you have any further questions.

    Best Regards,

    Mia
