Hi Guys,

Just transferring some Data over from one SharePoint site to another.

Is there a quick way of doing this?

I move it from one SharePoint to the other by right clicking and then move, however, that just seems to take an age to do.

Is there a quicker way?

Thanks.

Dear Max Staniland,

The detailed steps would be following (if you want to move files from one SharePoint site to another new SharePoint site):

1.Create the new site, then sync one document library from the new site to your local computer. (this is destination library)

2.Go to your old SharePoint site which contains files you want to move, find the document library and sync files to local computer*(this is source library)*

3.In File explorer, move files from source folder to destination folder.

(As far as we know, when we move files in File explorer, it may display the progress bar to show you the transferring status)

After you move files to the destination folder, OneDrive will sync these files to SharePoint Online, as long as it doesn't display any sync error, your files will all sync to SharePoint Online. When it finishes synchronization, you can go to SharePoint Online, go to the new SharePoint site and check the result.

If you want other people see the transferred files in the new SharePoint site, just let them access the new SharePoint site in SharePoint Online on their devices.

For your concern about "how would you find out what has been missed and what hasn't in the transfer"

In the destination folder if you find all files show syncing status icon (blue cloud icon, or green tick icons), they should have been synced to SharePoint Online.

If you find files shows red X icon, it may have sync issue and cannot sync to SharePoint Online, then it isn't transferred to the new SharePoint site. In this situation, you can also try manually uploading that file to SharePoint Online.

For reference: What do the OneDrive icons mean? (microsoft.com)

Hope above can help you!

Sincerely,

    Ok Perfect thank you,

So I don't have to go to the SharePoint online and press upload? It will just Sync automatically?

    Thanks for this, life saver.

Ok perfect, so in practice if someone wants there data moving from one SharePoint site to another,

    You would

    1. Create the site
    2. Sync that new site
    3. Copy all the data across via File explorer
    4. Then, if you wanted to sync that on other peoples devices, they would then go to SharePoint online and press sync

What would you do if files where missing? how would you find out what has been missed and what hasn't in the transfer?

    Thanks,

    Dear Max Staniland,

Yes, OneDrive App will automatically sync changes from local sync folder to SharePoint Online, you don't need to press Upload in SharePoint Online.

We hope above can help you.

    Have a nice day!

    Dear Max Staniland,

Good day! Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

From description, you want to transfer data from one SharePoint site to another site with a quicker way.

May I know if you want to move files from one SharePoint site to another site?

If yes, generally, we have 2 ways to move files between sites in SharePoint Online:

Option 1 is use the Move command.

Option 2 is use OneDrive sync.

Since you mentioned the Move method seems take an age to move files, you may try the Option 2: use OneDrive sync, see if it can move files in a quicker way.

You need to sync both the source document library and destination document library to computer, then just move files from source folder to destination folder in Windows File Explorer, then let OneDrive sync do its job and sync change to SharePoint Online.

For more information, you may refer to Sync SharePoint and Teams files with your computer (microsoft.com)

At the same time, we recommend syncing no more than 300,000 files across all libraries, because performance issue can occur if you have 300,000 items or more across all libraries that you are syncing. Here is an article for reference: SharePoint limits - Service Descriptions | Microsoft Learn

If our understanding of the scenario is not consistent with yours, feel free to point it out.

Hope you keep safe and healthy always!
