Microsoft Edge stuttering on Windows 11 24H2

Windows 11 - Back in November, I have update my system to 24H2 version and, after it, I noticed that Edge (the browser that I use the most) was behaving very weird, like some kind of stuttering.

It happens when the hardware acceleartion is enabled; at first, the general usage (but mainly scrolling) feels normal, but after a few minutes it starts slowing, and then stutters a lot (by scrolling some web pages, which is the most noticeable way to identify).

It is fixed by disabling hardware acceleration.

    Hello,

So, I think I just identified what's exactly happening: when I use the PiP mode (picture-in-picture) to, for example, watch YouTube videos (usually), it suddenly slows donw, if disabled, it runs smoothly.

The only way that fixes this issue is disabling hardware acceleration.

I wanted to show a screen record here, but I'm not able to.

Anyway, I'll be sending a feedback to notify the issue.

    Thanks for responding.

    Hello,

As mentioned above, those features have known bugs with the Intel GPU. You can disable those features again if it made the situation worse, and send feedback regarding the issue as mentioned above.

    Hello,

So, I enabled one of the flags you suggested:

The first one (#ignore-gpu-blocklist) actually stabilised it, after a few minutes browsing and scrolling. The other flag (#skia-graphite) I haven't tried yet.

Any further updates I'll be notifying here.

But, anyway, thanks for your assistance.

Update: using Edge with #skia-graphite enabled, as I just experienced slowdowns and heavy stutters while using, to the point it froze for a few seconds.

Update 2: expiriencing slowdowns right now (using #skia-graphite).

Update 3: Edge feels stable now (using #skia-graphite).

    Hello,

Thanks for getting back to us and letting us know.

Regarding the stuttering, it is possibly because you are using the integrated Intel GPU and there may be webpages open that uses lots of GPU performance. Based on the feature status, the GPU itself is working properly but the performance seems to be barely better than rendering the pages in software (which can explain why disabling hardware acceleration makes the issue disappear). Still, I recommend keeping hardware acceleration enabled, as it offloads the load from CPU to GPU, so the CPU can spend less cycles rendering the webpage and the UI.

Also based on the GPU log, it seems that not all GPU features are enabled because there are known bugs preventing them from being used. You can try force enabling those features in the flags page (edge://flags/) and see whether the performance improves. Please note that there are known unfixed bugs, which may cause the webpage to glitch; in that case, you can reset the flags.

    • Override software rendering list
    • Skia Graphite
