A unified data governance solution that helps manage, protect, and discover data across your organization
(1) Does Purview notify the relevant data stewards or owners that this new asset sits without metadata?
Microsoft Purview does not natively send notifications to data stewards when a new asset or column is discovered that lacks metadata. The scanning process will update the catalog, but it won’t automatically trigger alerts or tasks for users.
(2) If not, how is it possible to do so? Do I need, for example, an Azure Function that checks, periodically, which new assets have been added to Purview and notify the domain stewards?
Here's a common approach:
- Azure Function + Purview REST API: Create an Azure Function that uses the Purview REST API to periodically:
- Query for recently added or updated assets.
- Check if required metadata fields (like description, glossary terms, classifications, etc.) are missing.
- Send notifications (via email, Teams, or other platforms) to the relevant data stewards. You could base stewardship assignment on asset ownership, tags, or a mapping table.
- Logic Apps or Power Automate: If you're looking for a more low-code solution, Power Automate can be integrated with the API as well, and used to send out alerts when gaps are found.
- Integration with Microsoft Purview Workflow (Preview): Microsoft is also rolling out a workflow feature (in preview) that allows you to define business processes (like requesting metadata completion) and assign tasks. While it may not fully automate detection of incomplete metadata yet, it's worth keeping an eye on.
